Whassup: So Proud Edition
Well, Slopists, it's an exciting time to be Prideful, especially since the President's on board now. But he's behind the times in Brooklyn, of course, where Borough President Marty Markowitz has long been annoying people at festivals both orientation-neutral and pride-supporting. Catch an event every day leading up to Pride Day on Saturday, but, of course, you can be proud to be you, etc., even without a parade, so take part, pridefully, in all the fun the 'hood has to offer with Whassup: So Proud Edition:
* Through Sunday, June 10: BK Film Festival, BK Heights Cinema and Indiescreen: After the image of a giant green man punching a dude with a hammer wears off your overstimulated retinas, catch some smaller (and likely better) cinema at Brooklyn's own film fest, including My Brooklyn, about the controversial transformation of downtown BK. Various times.
* Thursday, June 7: Sunset Bhangra, BK Bridge Park: Bollywood's still a thing that's hip to like, right? Or, has that passed? Well, it's a shame, if so. That shit should persist, like a heavy Indian meal in your stomach. Enjoy both at the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy's Bhangra-themed fundraiser, a tradition since 2001. From $25 for kids, $125 adults. 6pm-9pm.
* Thursday, June 7: Golden Girls vs. Designing Women: Pop-culture nostalgia is to Brooklyn as self-righteous soliloquies are to Julia Sugarbaker. This one sells itself. In fact, the only question is, who you got, Brooklyn? I take the Designing Women, personally. Because, never cross a Sugarbaker woman. 8pm, $12.
* Thursday, June 7: Communion NYC, Union Hall: Debuting in NYC at our very own Union Hall, Communion is an indie-band showcase that originated in London, led by Ben Lovett of Mumford and Sons, among others. It's planned to be a monthly series (first Thursdays). Come, so you can say those seven words for which every hipster lives: "I saw them before they got big." 7:30pm, $12.
* Saturday, June 9: Pride Day, Prospect Park: All Pride, All Day. It steps out at 8am with a 5k run and keeps on kicking through the night parade, starting at 7:30pm and running along 5th Ave. from 14th to Sterling.
* Saturday, June 9: AfroCubism, Prospect Bandshell: Miss the opening Celebrate Brooklyn show with Jimmy Cliff? Yeah, me too. Good thing the shows keep going all summer (well, not ALL summer, if you count most of August, but let's not split hairs). Next up, the bandshell continues to earn its rep as a top site for world music, with Afrocubism, an all-star collaboration of Malian and Cuban musicians. Don't let those Park Slope fetii gestating in their hip moms get all the brain-building benefits of good music. 6:30pm, Doors, FREE ($3 suggested donation).
* Sunday, June 10: Pretty Good Comedy, Bell House: Eugene Mirman's weekly showcase of stander-uppers, with Mirman's own hilarious stage patter, Pretty Good Friends, wraps things up for the season, starring the Daily Show's Wyatt Cenac and more. There's also talk of a "very special guest," which could easily be a Michael Showalter, a David Cross, a Todd Berry, or some other comedy-nerd idol. Note: That pricing's not a typo. It's really $89 if you buy DOS. Weird. So, get your tickets early. $15 online, $89 DOS.
* Tuesday, June 12: Whiskey Coke Reading, Freddy's: The punk-lit nerds of "Having a Whiskey Coke With You" return with all the zine, reading, and open-mic love you need in the Backroom. Also, did you know Freddy's has tater tots? 8pm, FREE.
