Whassup: Seize Summer by Its BBQ-Flavored Balls And Don't Let Go Edition

via alvinailey.org

Well, somehow it got to be August, y'all. That means one month left before it's time to re-sharpen those pencils and re-wad those balls of spit. Summer has crept it's sneaky ass right past us again, so make the most of it while it's still here. Time for Whassup: Seize Summer by Its BBQ-Flavored Balls And Don't Let Go Edition:

* Thursday, Aug. 4 through Saturday, Aug. 6: LAST FREE SHOWS OF BRIC: The Celebrate Brooklyn summer season at the Prospect Park bandshell is like your first time: it's over before you know it and it's kinda weird when people take pictures. Hey-oh! Anyway just like that, we're up to the last weekend of free BRIC shows. Lap up the last drops of bandshell goodness with:
    * A showing of the classic, silent sci-fi click Metropolis, accompanied by the Alloy Orchestra on Thursday, 6pm Gates.
    * Poppy and symphonic Ra Ra Riot rock the bandshell on Friday, 6pm Gates.
    * Revelations from modern dance masters Ailey II on Saturday, 7pm Gates.

* Saturday, Aug. 6:
Misstallica, Union Hall: Prerequisite to thrash metal are killer locks to snap like bullwhips. And, sorry, Sebastian Bach, long hair just looks better on chicks. All-female Metallica tribute band Misstallica splits the air with early Metallica thrash, and fills the stage with twice as many X-chromosomes as the original article. The ladies focus on the first four Metallica albums, back before the Black Album, when those dudes still worked in their native realm of thrash metal. 8pm Doors, $12 DOS.

* Sunday, Aug. 7:
FREE Brooklyn Culture, GAP area:"Heart of Brooklyn" is an alliance of the Prospect Park, Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Central Library, and other temples of knowledge clustered around Grand Army Plaza. Sunday, all six sites open their doors, gates, and MINDS for free. There's also Brooklyn-themed mini-golf and probably a mime. I mean, chances are there'll be a mime or someone juggling something somewhere, right? Only one way to find out: Go visit! Regular hours, FREE.

* Wednesday, Aug. 10:
Secret Science Screening, Bell House: Park Slope's favorite purveyors of inebriated nerdiness return with everyone's favorite class activity: movie day! They'll be showing Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives about the band Eels' lead-singer Mark Everett and his troubled relationship to his dad, a physicist whose genius was only recognized posthumously. As always, SSC accompanies the night with punny, science cocktails. 7:30pm Doors, FREE.

* Now Seeking Collaborators: Celebration of Life "Be-In," September: Oh, wow. Finally, everyone. Finally. There's going to be a "be-in." I thought since I left a college town, my days of seeing "be-ins" were over. Not so. Next month a collective of dancers, choreographers, body painters, drummists and more "celebrate life"at the St. Mark's Community Garden. Goddess bless 'em, the peaceful souls behind it are seeking creative collaborators. Write CelebrationofLifeNYC@gmail.com.
