Whassup: Pride Edition!
With a governor finally fucking on board for marriage equality, NYC pride should be, ahem, over the rainbow. Our fair borough showcases its wonderful pride this weekend as part of the awesome return of summer. It's Whassup: Pride Edition!
* Thursday, June 9: Battle for Brooklyn Screening, Fort Green Park: Part of the Rooftop Films series, this collection of flickering images documents the "Develop Don't Destroy" fight against Bruce Ratner's molestation of the Atlantic Yards. The documentary follows central combatant, Daniel Goldstein, who joins the filmmakers for a Q and A afterward. Meanwhile, if you squint, you may be able to see, in the near distance, a basketball stadium shaped like Bruce Ratner's penis, obscenely rising into the night sky. 8:30 pm, FREE.
* Friday, June 10: Brooklyn Folk Festival, Jalopy Theatre: Hitch up yer boy howdies and chase a June bug off a yeller, I reckon! Phrases like this will make perfect sense, I promise, amid the old-time ballads, blues, pre-blues, bluegrass, Carribean, and more at this down-home hootenanny, expanded to three days this year to fit in all the twangs. Also: squaredance, instrument workshops, and a FUCKING BANJO TOSS. Continues Saturday and Sunday at BWAC. $20 per day, $55 for three days.
* Friday, June 10: Andrew Bird, Prospect Park Bandshell: Celebrate Brooklyn officially kicks off its summer bandshell series with Andrew Bird, backed by a full band. Get there early, to nab a spot in line. Or set up a picnic outside the gates, and let Prospect Park's odd melange of music, children's laughter and pot smoke waft on by. 6:30 Gates, FREE.
* Saturday, June 11: Brooklyn Pride Day, Prospect Park at Bartel-Pritchard Circle: PRIDE DAY! There's shit going on from the AM to purple dusk. Celebrations begin with the oxymoronically named Fun Run at 8, continuing into the Multicultural Festival street fair, from 11-6. Finally, Pride Parade takes to the night, starting at 7:30 pm, winding its fabulous way along 5th Ave. from 14th St. to Sterling Place.
* Saturday, June 11: Brooklyn Pride Happy Hour: From Freddy's in South Slope up to Miriam's on Prospect Place, drinkeries along Fifth Ave honor the gays with Pride specials before the parade. Hell, I'll drink to anything: Let's do some equality shots! 5-7pm.
* Tuesday, June 14: Pop Culture Trivia, Bell House: Supporting VH1's Save the Music, which advocates for music education in local schools, Pat Kieman from VH1's The World Series of Pop Culture mines Slope brains for useless tidbits about '80s pop stars and sitcom catch phrases. Come show off the detritus that fills your skull. 7pm, $20.
