Whassup: Paradise City Edition
So, did anyone out there in BK-land snap up tix to that bizarre G 'n' R show at Brooklyn Bowl? I say "bizarre" for several reasons: 1) It was just suddenly announced via the BK Bowl Facebook page, on Tuesday, with tickets going on sale that evening. And the show is today. 2) It's Axl Rose, so it's automatically just kind of weird at this point. 3) They're a really big band (yes, still) to be playing Brooklyn Bowl. 4) Did I mention Axl Rose is involved? 5) Tickets are $150 a pop. That's kind of a lot for a base level, amiright? I mean, guess that's because of point 3, but still… 6) Also, it's Axl Rose. Anyway, so the show is tonight. Honestly, despite all the foregoing, I probably would have gone had I been able to. I really want to hear from people how it went. In any event, welcome to Whassup: Paradise City Edition:
* Thursday, June 6: Sunset Ohana Fundraiser, BK Bridge Park: I identified this specifically as a fundraiser in the header, which might seem unusual. Like, that might be a detractor. But I think that's the main draw in this case -- helping out Brooklyn Bridge Park, which is a very cool place. The actual event is some Hawaiian-themed thing, but that just reminds me of prom. Gross. But maybe it'll be fun? There'll be a roasted pig! And ukuleles! You guys like ukuleles, right? 6pm-9pm, $125 (and waaay up).
* Saturday, June 8: Red Hook Immersion: Brooklyn Based's Immersions -- neighborhood-specific food and beer crawls -- return with Red Hook. That makes sense. The 'hood, and the frankly awesome businesses within that hood, still need help recovering from the Sandy blowjob. You pick up a ticket, starting at noon, at Brooklyn Ice House or Rocky Sullivan's. Then, you just go around drinking complimentary beers and partaking of food specials, like lobster rolls from Red Hook Lobster Pound. Then, you slip into a satisfied day-drinking/food coma. Then, maybe you wake up. Maybe. Note: there are only 500 cards, and they all got nabbed in about an hour last year. Noon-6pm, FREE.
* Saturday, June 8: Barefoot & Bankside, Bar 4: If you know Roots Cafe in South Slope (if that's even actually a real place), then you probably love this little coffee shop. It's very welcoming, and everyone who works there is a musician. Yes, I realize that this is not exactly unusual for a Brooklyn coffee shop, but in this case, the workers are sort of like a band. Including the owner! Cool. Anyway, they play -- wait for it -- roots music, and they are unveiling a new project at Bar 4. 8pm, FREE.
* Sunday, June 9: PS Dog Dash, Gate: It's a scavenger hunt for dogs and their people -- beginning naturally enough at The Gate, where you can always count on tripping drunkenly over a dog. The Dash raises funds for Foster Dogs NYC, a nonprofit that helps shelters and rescues find homes for their pups. Little dogs who need homes, people! What are you, monsters?! Gather up those melted hearts, and go chase shit around with some dogs. 11:45am-2pm, $20 ($20 DOS).
* Monday, June 10: German Beers, Terroir: This second in a series of beer classes (aaghh…beer) at the Terroir wine shop tackles the thing Germany might be best known for historically if it weren't for, you know, those things they did: beer! You'll sample German Hefeweizens et al., and talk about how great they are. And if you really like it, there's a last class on Belgium suds the next Monday. Because, seriously, in the brew-pub-rich world that is contemporary Brookly, you're gonna need to boast some beer-snob chops during at least one first date. 7pm, $19.
* Monday, June 10: Cenac and Barry, Littlefield: Wyatt Cenac has Todd Barry at his Littlefield show this week. So, that's just an awesome double shot of awesomeness. Barry is the greatest, and Cenac is pretty good. Then, there will also be other comedians, of course. And they probably won't suck. But Todd Barry will make you laugh with parts of your brain you forgot you had. 8pm, $5-$8.
* Tuesday, June 11: BBQ Blowout (w/Dale Talde), Good Co. (Williamsburg): Dale Talde owns Park Slope's stomachs. At least, those stomachs attached to mouths that enjoy gastropub and BBQ fare. The chef behind Pork Slope, Talde and Thistle Hill is manning the grill at this edition of the BBQ Blowout. Eat so much of it, you guys. 7pm-10pm, $10.
* Tuesday, June 11-Thursday, June 13: Chickfactor 21, Bell House: A whole mess of bands are taking over Bell House for the 3-day festival hosted by chickfactor music magazine (now a website, duh, because it is 2013). You can grab a three-day pass or just go for a night. Either way, you will rock so hard. 8pm, $30/night, $70/3-day pass.
