Whassup: March Meh-ness Edition
The forecast for Saturday is rain and low 50's, so I guess we're out like a sort of pussy lion? But really, the important thing about the end of March is that it's Final Four weekend. I think we can all agree that a neighborhood that votes on voting to ban organic products from certain countries and has spots to buy cappuccino every two feet is totally a neighborhood full of jocks. But, yeah, if you're not into the basketball this weekend, there's plenty else to do. Welcome to Whassup: March Meh-ness Edition:
* Saturday, March 31: Carousel Centennial, Prospect Park: I realize this is more of a breeder attraction, but hey: underemployed, single people still need cute (cheap) places to take their underemployed dates. Or, to take ironic pictures to garner excessive likes on facebook. Accomplish either or both of those feats as the Prospect Park Carousel turns 100. Opening day this Saturday. Located in Children's Corner. 12pm-4pm. $2 per ride.
* Saturday, March 31: Arts in Buswick Flyering Day, Norte Maar: Help a Brooklyn neighborhood with its early steps down the gentrification pathway that Park Slope long ago tread. They're so cute when they're learning to crawl! Less snarkily, help out a local artistic collective, and feel good about yourself, by volunteering during this flyering drive. Pick up flyers between 1:30 and 3:30pm at Norte Maar. Pizza rewards back at Norte Maar at 6pm.
* Saturday, March 31- Sunday, Aprl 1: Dist. 39 Money Votes: Tell those bureaucrats up on that (metaphorical) hill what's what. Specifically, tell them what's the what they should spend public funds on. Votes happening this weekend, to decide amongst tree planting, school technology, library improvements, Prospect Park ped pathway rehab, and other projects. Find voting locations here.
* Monday, April 2: Brooklyn Tales, Union Hall: Holy shit, seriously, we've got another storytelling series. And it's at Union Hall, which should probably change its name to Union Hall Story Time (and Also Bar). But, hey, not complaining. These things are good. This one focuses on the borough we all love so much, hosted by Moth GrandSLAM champ Giulla Rozzi. 7:30 pm, $10.
* Tuesday, April 3: Hula Hoop Class, Carroll Gardens Library: Maybe it's because it's being held at a library, but I don't think this is even meant to be ironic. This class just seriously wants to let adults have some fun gyrating their hips -- in a (mostly) wholesome manner. Certified "Hoopnotica" instructor Celi Kutcher will command you to sway the right way. 6pm, FREE.
* Tuesday, April 3: And I Am Noy Lying, Union Hall: The AIANL crew, who are still going strong with their monthly residency at Union Hall, return with another buffet-line serving of storytelling, sideshow, burlesque, and comedy. 8pm, $10.
* Tuesday, April 3: Moth StorySLAM, Bell House: The granddaddy of NYC story slam events finds its post-Southpaw-demise Slope home at the Bell House, a natural choice, really. The theme is "Duped." Come early, these things are popular as shizz. 7:30pm, $8. (You can also buy $16 presale online at noon DOS).
* Ongoing: BK Folk Festival Kickstarter:Our little slice of BK sure seems to love its roots music. That's cool, I love it, too. Do you love it? Love it with your wallet! The BK Folk Festival -- a fantastic collection of roots, old country, and bluegrass bands at the fantastic Jalopy theater in May -- just launched a Kickstarter campaign. If banjo strings yank your heart strings, pony up a dime or two.
