Whassup: Let's Get Besploded Edition
Let's face it: we're all exploding this weekend, whether from devouring too much BBQ or diving on an errant firecracker to keep it from damaging our precious BBQ. Well, blow up in style with a long, fun holiday weekend. If you're staying in town, welcome to Whassup: Let's Get Besploded Edition:
* Now Accepting Submissions: Frogmen of the Gowanus: Giving BK props to the '55 Dodgers, the Brooklyn Lyceum is in search of 55 writers, actors and improvisers to create a weekly improv and sketch event. Send writing samples, headshots, recordings of the funniest sounds your body makes, etc. to frogment@gowanus.com.
* Friday, July 1: Steel Pulse raggae, at the Bandshell: Celebrate Brooklyn jams into the holiday weekend with an old-school raggae set from Steel Pulse. Nothing says a long weekend of relaxation like the diggable beats of a Rasta band and the associated smokeables which will by no means be thick as a swarm of wasps at the show. 7:30, FREE.
* Saturday, July 2: Brit-Pop Battle, Bell House: We fought off the British oh so many score ago, only to see them repeatedly reinvade armed with guitars and influential hairdos. A pale imitation of that first Beatles-led British Invasion, Blur and Oasis' Brit Pop douchery did provide some catchy tunes and ridiculous tabloid shit in the '90's. Bell House celebrates America's Independence weekend by riffing on their rivalry. NY's Brit-Pop influenced Streamers cover both bands. U2 and Depeche Mode tributes open. 8pm, $10.
* Saturday, July 2: Bitchin' 4th, Bar Reis: What era could do red, white and blue like the decade of Top Gun, Born in the USA, Hulkamania and Reagan platitudes? (Ok, maybe the 1770s...) Get all star-spangled Maverick this weekend with a night of self-described "righteous '80's music" at Reis. 10pm, NO COVER.
* Sunday, July 3: Build-a-Boat, Gowanus Canal: Let's face it: Build a Bear is for pussies. Build a fuckin' boat! Artists Natalia Porter and Ben Cohen invite all hands to the Gowanus Studio Space to help construct a traditional Mexican craft, the Trajinera. That's right, all you Park Slope graphic designers and web editors, you can make something that actually does shit IRL! The playful work begins that Sunday and continues three weeks until completion. 11am, $65 suggested donation.
* FIPS will have a separate post for all July 4th events, so keep an eye out!
* Tuesday, July 5: The Moth, Southpaw: The ridiculously popular story-slam series brings its spillers of tales to the Southpaw stage. This post-Fourth edition tackles the topic of "Fireworks." Come at least an hour early -- seriously, Brooklynites eat this live storytelling shit right up. 7:30 doors, $8 DOS.
