Whassup: Halloween Edition
Today is Halloween, and I can't think of any monster, murderer or sexy devil scarier than the global weirding that likely contributed to last Halloween's awful Sandy storm surge. So, here, read this. Boo! Welcome to Whassup: Halloween Edition:
* Thursday, Oct. 31: Halloween Block Party, BAM: I really don't care to go into all the details, but it's a bunch of kid stuff. So if you're into those (well, not into them -- if you have kids), then why not? It should be some good, clean Breeder fun, with lots of annoying Halloween music and tooth-rotting handouts. At the Peter Jay Sharp Building, 4pm-7pm, FREE.
* Thursday, Oct. 31: Silent Ball, Silent Barn: Continuing the grand tradition of Halloween cover-band shows, Silent Barn will host Celestial Shore + Steve Marion as Led Zeppelin, Whoarfrost as Nirvana, "You" as Interpol, and other acts. The point, I think, is to get so wasted you think Kurt Cobain and John Bonham have arisen. Zombie rock! 7pm, $12 ($10 with costume).
* Friday, Nov. 1: Co-Work Space Opening, BK Lyceum: The Lyceum adds their space to the stable of co-working sites in Brooklyn. Pretty standard amenities: tables, Internet, a cafe, go-juice (Intelligentsia). It seems like it will be a pretty good place to pretend to do work. Open 8am-6pm.
* Friday, Nov. 1: Brooklyn Night Bazaar Returns, 165 Banker St. (Greenpoint): A little bit of Middle East haggle returns with the BK Night Bazaar. And now it's turning into a year-round, weekend event. Their new, 24,000-square-foot space will stand as Brooklyn's second-biggest music venue, after that place where New Jersey's old team plays. Open Fridays and Saturdays, 6pm-midnight, FREE to enter.
* Friday, Nov. 1: Zombie Cash, Jalopy: Zombie country! Every hipster's favorite country singer gets the monster treatment, with Zombie Johnny Cash, joined by Bob-Bloody Tracks-Dylan and Roy GOREbison (get it??). It's Halloween songs done country-death style. 9pm, $10.
* Saturday, Nov. 2: Gotham Write-In, Two Moon: It happens in other months, but November may be as good a time as any to attend one of Gotham Writers' Workshop's "Write-Ins" at Two Moon -- given that it's National Novel Writing Month and all. This is (slightly) more than a you-sit-down-and-write gathering -- a Gotham instructor will loft a writing prompt at your word cellars, and after you trot out your store of sentences, you can read aloud (if you'd like). It's a great way for introverted writers to get out and be jealous of one another's relative talent in person. Continues every Saturday. 12pm, $20 (or 3 sessions for $45).un
* Saturday, Nov. 2: Fuck Sandy Pub Crawl, Red Hook: Come celebrate a year's worth of recovery from Sandy with a pub crawl in our area's hardest-hit neighborhood: Red Hook. Crawl starts at Ice House, hits three other spots, and ends at the inspirational, just-reopened Sunny's. 2pm.
* ONGOING: Bahaha, Win Pavilion (haha) Tickets AHAHA!!: We know you, haha, want it. Here's your, hahaha, chance to, AHAHA, win a month's worth of tickets to the, hahaha, GREAT, Pavilion Movie Theater!! All you have to do is sign up for their newsletter, which will be, hahaha, GREAT!!
