Whassup: Fall Calling Edition

Summer has a few traditions: the first pitch, July 4th explosions, beer gardens, the swift end of the Celebrate Brooklyn season. Well, it always seems swift to me. Lyle Lovett closes out this year's edition (see below). That means it's almost football season, I suppose, so we can all look forward to soon pastifying these summer tans. Welcome to Whassup: Fall Calling Edition:

* Friday, Aug. 10: Spike Does BK (Again), BAM: Opening Aug. 10, Spike Lee returns (cinematically) to Brooklyn, with a joint on religion in Red Hook. Spike himself visits the 7:10 and 10pm showings opening night. Come ask if the number-one Knicks fan plans to be at any Brooklyn Nets games. Various times, $12.

* Saturday, Aug. 11: Beets and Beats, Korzo: A new (planned-to-be) annual gathering, "Brooklyn Beet Day" combines two of Park Slope's obsessions: artisanal foods and local music. Taste suds from Peak Organic and a new beet-sugar vodka from Industry City Distillery. 8pm, FREE.

* Saturday, Aug. 11: Detropia Screening, American Can Factory (Gowanus): Rooftop Films comes to Gowanus, to shed flickering lights over Park Slope's canal-rich neighbor. This film delves into the eerie emptiness of hollowed-out, modern Detroit. 8pm, $12.

* Saturday, Aug. 11: Lyle Lovett, Bandshell: Celebrate Brooklyn's 2012 season in the park drops the curtain with Mr. Lovett. Make this one count, guys, because soon the winter comes, when you'll dream longingly of summer concerts. 7:30pm, FREE.

* Tuesday, Aug. 14: Homebrew Tasting, Union Hall (Upstairs): The "Knights of Bruklyn Homebrewer's Sentry" want to put homemade beers in you. Then, you get to help vote on the most talented fermenters. Everybody wins. (Except the losers.) 7pm, FREE.

* Tuesday, Aug. 14: Whiskey Coke Reading, Freddy's: Fresh of their one-year birthday, the local literary scenesters of "Having  a Whiskey Coke with You" return to share words, song, and drunkenness. 8pm, FREE.

* Thursday, Aug. 16: N'awlins Jazz, BK Museum: Celebrating New Orleans's ongoing, post-Katrina renaissance, some Big Easy jazz from trumpeter Antoine Drye's band will fill the museum. At the Martha A. and Robert S. Rubin Pavilion, 1st Floor. 7pm, museum admission ($12 suggested donation).

* Thursday, Aug. 16: Secret Shark Science, Bell House: So, how are YOU celebrating shark week? Personally, I'm marking the occasion by tracking and hunting the injured and containing large amounts of cartilage. But, to each his own. You can also learn about shark migrations with NY Aquarium shark-tracker Hans Wlaters, hosting a live-screening of a documentary about shark migrations from "Shark Week" on the Discovery Channel. 7:30pm Doors, FREE.
