Whassup: Ain't Too Hot to Party Edition
It's a heat wave, bitches! Well, pick your melted bones up off the Fifth Avenue pavement and shake your sweaty fists at Gobal Warming with this blast of anti-heat fun. It's Whassup: Ain't Too Hot to Party Edition:
* Thursday, July 14: The Old '97's, Bell House: The Dallas alt-country pioneers rootsify the Bell House for the second of a two-night stint. $35, 8pm.
* Thursday, July 14: Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Coney Island: Joan Jett will always rock 'n' roll -- word is, she loves it. Head beachward for Borough President Marty Markowitz' summer series at West 21st and Surf Avenue. It's almost worth it just for the spectacle of a self-indulgent Markowitz bloviattion. 7:30pm, FREE.
* Friday, July 15: Overflow Magazine Party, de Castellane Gallery (539 Atlantic Ave.): Mingle amidst plentiful booze and cultural talk at Overflow's latest rager. Sip on cheap beer and bourbon by the case from Pabst and Buffalo Trace in the gallery's backyard. Snowy Wilderness also unveils their latest pop-up show. 6-9pm.
* Friday, July 15: Literary Karaoke, Word in Greenpoint: Remove the music from karaoke and you strip it to its dorky essence -- while sparing ears the pain of 1/2-note-off wails. Add books and you've got a made-for-Brooklyn geek down. Come play the role of your favorite ink-stained storyteller and read a passage. This month's theme is work from the '90's. 7pm, FREE. Sign up to perform between 6:30 and 7.
* Saturday, July 16: Bastille French Down, Littlefield: Celebrate Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity (and booze and pasties) at the Skint's Bastille Day party. Burlesque dancers with (attached) Marie Antioniette domes bring the ooh-la-lah, while mimes from Clown About Town will hopefully entertain you more than they annoy. Setting the musical atmosphere, the eight-piece Hot Sardines band strums jazz, dixieland and French chanson, with tap dancing. And because this is an American party after all, there'll be a (baguette) eating contest. Drink specials abound, including free gin from 2 to 3. $2, 2-6pm.
* Sunday, July 17: Ice Cream Takedown, Bell House: The folks behind other Bell House face-stuffing shindigs, including the Bacon Takedown, give melting Brooklyners what we've been 's-creaming for: a schmorgasbord of cold treats. Sample, judge, and cool core body temps with 20-30 scoops of Brooklyn Ice Cream. $15, 4pm.
