Whassup: Ain't Got Time to Hibernate Edition
Well, it's finally gotten as cold as it's supposed to this time of year, which means you have a choice: hibernate beneath layers of blankets and takeout-derived fat, or decide to interpret those erect nipples not as a normal, physiological response to the temperature, but as an abnormal excitement for life. Go with the latter and get out there to enjoy the Slope with Whassup: Ain't Got Time to Hibernate Edition:
* Thursday, Jan. 19: Rejection Show w/Ted Leo, Littlefield: Originally conceived (I think) as a showcase for rejected jokes, the Rejection Show has branched into music. Come hear the songs that tasteless assholes said were no good -- from punky singer-songwriter Ted Leo (of the Pharmacists) and others. 7:30pm Doors, $8-10.
* Friday, Jan. 20: The Marijuana-Logues, Bell House: Dude. Duude, like...totally. What if...what if? Oh, man. 8pm, $10.
* Sunday, Jan. 22: Todd Barry as Eugene Mirman, Union Hall: Slope comedy emperor Eugene Mirman's "Pretty Good Friends" standup showcase returns after the holiday break -- when humor must be kept to a minimum to avoid upsetting the baby Jesus. This week the ultra-understated Todd Barry emcees, a man who's voice is so soothing, you would fall asleep if those soothing words weren't also hilarious. 7:30pm, $7.
* Sunday, Jan. 22: Spoken Word Open Mic, Freddy's: Meanwhile, the un-agented masses voice their funny and/or moving words over at Freddy's monthly open mic for poets, writers, comedians, singer-songwriters and anyone else with lips and lungs. You can be one of them -- or you can just listen. 9pm, FREE.
* Tuesday, Jan. 24: Story Collider, Union Hall: One of my favorite event concepts, combining the Slope's burgeoning storytelling scene with its love of booze-fueled science education -- the Story Collider is story's about science. This month, the theme is Wilderness, and the performers include writers, journalists, educators -- and FIPS' own comic story slinger, Kerri Doherty. 8pm, $10 DOS.
* Wednesday, Jan. 25: Big Apple Trivia, Bell House: So, you think you know New York? Ok, I mean, you've been gentrifying it for a few good years now since fleeing Cincinnati, so sure, you know New York. Come prove it at this New York trivia night, hosted by NYC news anchor Pat Kiernan. 7pm Doors, $25.
