WHASSUP: Weekend of 8/27

Thanks for sending along some pretty sweet shit.  It's all going down this weekend, so here's WHASSUP:

*Friday, August 27: Talk dirty.  Babeland Brooklyn, the Slope's favorite purveyors of all things sexy, host a free dirty talk mini-workshop at 8.  Aphrodesiac drink specials at Melt afterwards, in case you want to make sure that, in a few hours, you're incapable of using what you've learned.  Details.

*Saturday, August 28: Water balloon fight.  Even if you don't "do" North Brooklyn, this is kinda cool.  Greenpoint Open Studios is holding a fundraiser water balloon fight and raffle.  Get wet, benefit artists, win shit.  3 pm, get your info here.

*Sunday, August 29: 5k race.  Kiva New York's holding their Run4Kiva 5k in Prospect Park at 10am.  Info on the race, team, and registration here.

Alternately, you could offer to come over and help alleviate me of my cabin fever, an elaborate ruse for swiping my jars of Percocet.  But, uh, you should probably go do that other shit instead.  Just thinking out loud here.  As usual, add your much, much better ideas in the comments.

WHASSUP: Aug 12-18

YO IT IS A CAPS LOCK KIND OF DAY.  HERE IS WHASSUP IN THE SORTA-PARK SLOPE HOOD.

*Friday, August 13: Film with an intro.  BAM's Emotionally Sloppy Manic Cinema series continues with The Pleasure of Being Robbed.  The 6:50 screening will be introduced by actress Eleonore Hendricks and director Benny Safdie.  Film's only 71 minutes, so no need to bring your Aderall.

*Friday, August 13: Arty party.  Closing party for Jacob Williams’ collage-on-paper and sculpture exhibition (that's his piece above) is happening at We-Are-Familia’s Pop-Up Gallery and Event Space at 539 Atlantic Avenue, 7-10pm.  Get yer deets here

*Saturday, August 14: Funniez.  "Gentrify Brooklyn" is happening at the Brooklyn Lyceum with the ladies and gents of SIDECAR and m.a.d.  Tis only $5 so you can afford the rest of your night at The Sackett thereafter.

*Wednesday, August 18: Videoblogging 101.  We can't all be as good at life as Greg is, so learn how to videoblog your shit with the BRIC Arts crew.  Info on the two-hour class here.

*And if your upcoming week looks really bleak—we're a-talkin' to you, single folks—get your asses on to HowAboutWe and enter the code BKLUV for a free month of mixing and mingling, so you can feel like you fit in better in BREEDER LAND.  Plus, propose a sweet BK date and you could win some shit.

ON A FINAL NOTE, WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS TO YOUR SEXY ASSES ON FRIDAY THE THIRTEENTH.

SUBMIT YER OTHER SHIT IN THE COMMENTS, PREFERABLY NOT IN CAPS LOCK.  YO.

WHASSUP: Pie! Tonight! Pie!

In case you need a reason to drag your ass into a bar tonight, The Gate's giving you a good one: Their first annual Pie Bake-Off is happening tonight at 7 p.m.  It's being judged by locals Four & Twenty Blackbirds, so bust out your best last-minute delicacy, or head over to watch people gorge themselves.

We're told that beer goes with pie, and The Gate is determined to prove it to you.  Let us know if you head over and find out.

And, as long as we're talking about shit going on, here are two more things happening tomorrow night, Thursday, August 5:

*Reading series.  Gelf Magazine's Varsity Letters event happens in DUMBO.  Features authors Beth Raymer, Paul Solotaroff and Joseph E. Wallace. Infoz here.  'Tis free.

*Art opening.  Non-Native New York opens at de Castellane Gallery on Atlantic Avenue, and they'd like you to party with them from 6-9.  Details on the exhibit here (it sounds pretty rad, actually), plus location.

That's probably your WHASSUP for the week in lieu of your Thursday update, unless something epic is happening that I don't know about.  In which case, email our asses or comment away.

WHASSUP: July 29-Aug 4

Nothing too exciting going on in the Slope, so here's what's happening within shooting distance.  Leave your other haps in the comments, per usu.

*Thursday, July 29: Media Circus.  Gothamist's Jake Dobkin and and Grothspur's Mark Potts go over the year in and future of hyperlocal, whatever the fuck that is.  (Actually, we should know exactly what that is.)  Free and in DUMBO, so you don't have to stray from the F, since separation anxiety's a bitch.

*Thursday, July 29: Mad scientist filmmaker.  Short film involving a filmmaking monkey, and a live experiment happenin' at Rooftop Films' screening of Capucine: Filmmaking Monkeys and Other Renegades.  If you can deal with going to Fort Greene.  Info here.

*Saturday, July 31: Sonic Youth.  Free.  Bandshell.  Not Norah Jones.  Sonic Fucking Youth.  Details.  I think that about sums it up.

That's all I got for you.  Hello, Thursday.
