Whassup: In Like A Lion, Out Like A Lamb

image via Park Slope Lens

Dear fun-havers of the Slope: once you've recovered from the enforced drinking and regrettable-but-inevitable hook-ups with which we honor our nominal Irish heritages, get ready for some more fun!

This week's Whassup:

* Friday, March 18: Our buds at Overflow Magazine are celebrating the release of their Spring 2011 issue with a major rager. They're throwing a party tonight at the de Castellane Gallery Annex, which is right near the Atlantic/Pacific stop at 537 Atlantic Ave. Everything is going down tonight from 6:30pm to 9pm.

* Friday, March 18: Park Slope's getting its own Housing Works thrift store--and the volunteer-run non-prof is calling on volunteers to help with some donation drives. The first one's Friday. Contact Marc for the deets.

* Saturday, March 19: That not enough do-gooding for you? What is it--guilty conscience? Got it. Atone for your St. Paddy's Day sins by trucking e-waste to a neighborhood recycling event. 10am-4pm, Fifth Ave. b/t 3rd and 4th. Just be sure to get all your best, um, videos off the hard drive first.

* Saturday, March 19: NOT ENOUGH IRISH STEREOTYPES THIS WEEKEND? I mean, there's never enough, right? Pogues tribute band The Fauxges will channel Shane McGowan's drunken brilliance at the Rock Shop. 8pm, $7.

* Sunday, March 20: MN State Fair, Bell House: Since all of us in Brooklyn are Midwest transplants (or is that just Williamsburg?), the food-on-a-stick and butter sculpture of this month's installation of the Bell House State Fair series makes perfect sense. Word is MN pol and SNL alum Al Franken will be there to make fun of the conservative Republicans we all hoped to leave back home in St. Paul. 3pm-7pm, FREE.

* March 21-31: Sharpen your knives, your teeth, and your tooth-shaped knives. Brooklyn Restaurant Week (aka, Dine in Brooklyn) has arrived! Find a list of places to ruin your swimsuit body here.

* Tuesday, March 22: Storytelling at Pacific Standard: Master gabbers gather at the brew-pup for tales of disaster--Asteroids! Global Warming! Ishtar! (Seriously. That's not my joke--it's theirs.)

* Wednesday, March 23: The Beets, Union Hall: The middle of the week is shitty, no way around it. Pick yourself up with some catching melodies and tight jeans (observed, not worn, unless you want to). 7:30 pm doors, $8.

WHASSUP: Shit's Goin' On This Weekend and Next

It's Fashion Week, so I haven't known my fucking name since last Thursday. My threshold for pithy witticisms is long destroyed, so here's your vanilla WHASSUP:

*Friday, Feb 18: Play. Get your Black History Month on by seeing The Legend of Buster Neal, a new play by Jackie Alexander. Previews open on Friday at the Billie Holiday Theatre, and the show runs through Marc 3. Summary, tix and times here.

*Friday, Feb 18: Music to groove to. African-Latin band People's Champs play Barbes and debut their new EP. 10pm, $10. Info on the band and a preview of their music here.

*Friday, Feb 25: Longboard race. Push Culture is hosting the first-ever Prospect Park Winter Race for longboarders, or as they put it "wing nut surfing gypsies." 7.25 miles, two loops around the park, and festivities after. Here's your info should you want in.

*Saturday, Feb 26: Reproductive freedom rally. This isn't in the Slope, but you BALLERS might wanna head to Foley Sqaure from 1-3pm to help out Planned Parenthood keep abortion an option (otherwise, Park Slope is even more fucked). Info on the rally here, plus ways you can help.

And also: Creative hive 3rd Ward is ffering $50 bucks off membership until March 4. So if you need to fuel your creative soul or feel like making fun of "creative types" huddled in one concentrated place, go visit.

And boy, ain't vanilla tasty.
