Park Slope Parents and "The Free Willie Nelson" Mobile

Just when it was eroding fast, my faith in the awesomeness of Park Slope was restored this morning. I love that The Free Willie Nelson is parked on 8th avenue, almost as much as I love Erica for posting those ginormous man boobs below.

Gives me hope on a day I woke up to the news that my Park Slope Parents nemesees (?) nemesises? WHATEV...  that Nancy, "parenting guru/moderator," and her humorless cronies are starting a Park Slope Parents blog. God bless 'em.

Louise rolled out the welcome mat over at OTBKB, even offering a tray of daiquiris. God knows, they could use a few drinks over there.

BroBos in Paradise

A dedicated FIPS reader sent a link to this Observer article:

"Perhaps you remember the New York Times columnist David Brooks' coinage BoBos—short for Bourgeois Bohemians? Those latte-slurping, SUV-driving, Pottery Barn-shopping, NPR-listening creatures of the Clinton era? Ms. Hambleton and her ilk represent a new variation on the species: Brooklyn Bourgeois Bohemians. BroBos! Young, comfortable and inclined toward creativity, they enjoy a utopian-seeming existence marked by strolls down tree-lined streets, carefully chosen foods and leisurely weekends spent in coffee bars and parks. An existence only occasionally marred by the realization that this is not the hopped-up New York they came to conquer."

In the same week that Gawker taught us that Brooklyn isn't cool anymore b/c everyone talks about it too fucking much, comes news that we are all BroBos....or wannabe BroBos Well, I guess not all of us, but...eh, who the fuck am I kidding: ALL OF US.

AWESOME SHIT THIS WEEKEND: BIKEJUMBLE AND STREET FAIR

Photo:Aberjona on Flickr

We <3 bikes here at FIPS (though wear your helmet or I'll find you and bad things will happen), so we were quite pleased to read that this weekend brings back the Brooklyn Bike Jumble: a flea market for bikes.

According to the Brooklyn Paper, the cycilng masses will be congregating on Sunday, May 16 from 10-4 at Washington Park on Fifth Ave at 3rd Street and doing the ol' swaperoo on bikes, parts, and handy accessories to help you run with Billyburg's finest.  Bikes will be priced at pleasingly low $$ amounts, and there'll be a show of vintage bikes, too.  We're into it.

But wait!  There's more!  Infomercial levels of awesome! The Fifth Avenue Street Fair will be going on, too.  I can vouch that this thing is actually sweet, with live music and the companion Punk + Underground Record Fair at Southpaw (at which I've scored many an excellent record).  Hopefully the weather will not make us want to drink bleach.

So get fit, get hip, and get on a goddamn bike while listening to records or something.  You know, since our trains are dressed up in bus costumes for the next two weekends again, anyway.

SATURDAY: Won't You Be My Neighbor Day

This burst of spring has brought everybody out of hibernation at last. I had no idea how long winter was going on until it ended.

Inspired by Pittsburgh City Council Member Bill Peduto, I hereby proclaim this Saturday, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor Day” in Park Slope.
