Halloween Costume ideas from 5th Ave vintage shops
Need a last minute costume idea? If a sexy Chewbacca isn't cutting it this year, we've rounded up three costumes that you can create from vintage shops along 5th Avenue. These aren't your cookie cutter Devil costumes from the popup Ricky's, which is only in town for a few more days. Sure, they're a little pricier. But it's vintage! And you're totally worth it.
The newly-opened Hoi Polloi on 6th Street has a large assortment of old hats, badges, pipes and oddly silk robes. Here is their version of a COWGIRL Truth be told, it could totally be an entry for this new tumblr page. Still, I'm digging the sassy cowboy boots. It beats teetering around on platform heels all night.
- Red leather cowboy boots $30
- Ranchero hat $28
- Overall shorts $10
- Shortsleeve plaid buttondown $7
- Leather canteen bag $50
- TOTAL COST = $125
At Guvnor's, they literally have everything. Items like vintage embroidered ranchwear pant suit priced at $325 seem a little steep for Halloween. But hey, if you can wear an authentic pair of leather assless chaps ($50) more than one night a year, more power to ya'. As for the rest of us, any item in the store can be rented for two days at 25 percent of the total price. Here is their version of the 1 percent. Stay clear of Zuccotti Park.
- Black Top Hat $68.99
- Full length fur coat $68.99
- Crocodile skin dress shoes $29.99
- Bow tie $9.99
- Rat mask $22.99
- TOTAL COST = $200.95
Further down 5th Avenue is Life Thrift, with it's mammoth shoulder-padded ensembles and costume jewelry. I found a Ke$ha inspired jean jacket and mini skirt covered in sequences (clip-on feather extension not included). With a little help from the staff, we pulled together a LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD'S OLDER, SEXIER SISTER. The cape is dramatic and warm enough for this windy weekend.
- Red velvet cape $49
- Black slinky dress $46
- Costume jewelry $26
- Bejeweled pumps $29
- TOTAL COST = $150
