Clam Shack Baby!
Recently we got word that three dudes are planning on opening up a "New England-style clam shack" called Littleneck in a 1200-foot space over near the Gowanus Canal (specifically, 3rd Ave between Carroll & President). I spent the first twenty-two years of my life in New England and drove by a joint called Clam Haven almost every day on the way to high school, so I'm quite familiar with the ways of the New England-style clam shack. Basically, Brooklynites should get ready to be served big-bellied clams by a big-bellied woman with the sweetest non-ironic mullet you've ever seen.
I'm all for the idea, as the options for good Ipswich clams (not "Ipswitch clams," as spelled on the Littleneck website) down here in NYC are pretty pathetic. The ingredients will be sourced "from local and sustainable suppliers" and it sounds like the dudes behind Littleneck are trying to be all eco-friendly by using all sorts of reused & recycled materials to build the place, so that's cool. They’re also going to compost stuff & eventually run a van on the fryer oil.
To get things off the ground & get the place open, they've turned to the hip fundraising model of the day, Kickstarter, to help raise cash.
Even though there are still 28 days to go in the Fundraiser, they've already hit their goal of $8000, so I guess its opening is imminent. You can still get in on the fundraising action though, and win sweet rewards by doing so. For a $10 donation you'll get one free beverage (a secret code word for "beer") when you visit the place.
We know you're MUCH MORE BALLER than that though, so you should take that extra $5K you have lying around and donate it to their cause. In return, you'll get a free round of beers & a platter from the raw bar "EVERY TIME YOU STEP FOOT IN THE DOOR…FOR LIFE!!!" We’re talking FREE BEER FOR LIFE here, people. By dropping five G's, you're making an investment in your future. Don't have an extra $5K? That's fine. For $1K, you'll get free rounds & 2-for-1 raw bar specials for an entire year. That's a damn good perk in itself.
So yeah...don't be a clam. Support clams.
