12 Year Old Boy Killed By Van on Prospect Park West

Image via @BklynBiker on Twitter

Last night, around 5:45, I noticed helicopters over Prospect Park, and saw that Prospect Park West was jammed up with traffic all the way to Union Street. As I approached Garfield Place, I saw police cars a few blocks away, and a woman walking from that direction told me that a boy had been hit by a car after running into the street to get a ball.

When I got home, I saw that Park Slope Stoop had a few more details:

At about 5:15pm on Tuesday, a young boy was hit by a car on Prospect Park West at 3rd Street. According to the FDNY, they received a call about a 12-year-old boy being struck by a car, but they say the child was transported by Hatzolah, so they could not provide info on the boy’s condition, though there are reports on Twitterabout serious injuries. There are also reports that the NYPD crash investigators have been requested to the scene.

[What NOT To Order At]….Bierkraft

This week, our normally recurring column, "What You Should Order At," is replaced by What NOT to Order At, after FIPS writer Jim had a spooky experience with some pickled eggs. Think of it as a sort of ghost story to help get you in the mood for Halloween.

Gather around the fire children. Yes, huddle close. Listen to it crackle and pop. Smell the smoke and see the shadows dance. Uncle Jim has a scary story for you. You see...you push baby filled strollers under cracked, tree lined sidewalks and unwind with $10 sangrias that lull you into a false sense of safety. But there is a monster here in our friendly neighborhood. A pink bulb of hard sweetness. A giant M&M from hell. I’m talking about the pickled eggs at Bierkraft. What sorcery is this? What creature has this fallen from? A demon’s zygote made from a place of great evil.

Cool or Not Cool: Walking Your Dog While Riding Your Bike...In the Street

So, twice in the past week I've seen dudes on bikes with dogs walking/running on leashes beside them. This was not in Prospect Park, by the way. The first case was in the bike lane on Vanderbilt Avenue, with the dog on the side of moving traffic, and the second was on 6th Avenue, which has no bike lane, and again, the dog was on the side of the passing cars. What the fuck, people?!

The Pavilion Is Still The Worst

Over the weekend, we received emails from two different people complaining about a disastrous screening of Gravity at The Pavilion on Friday night:

At tonight's screening of Gravity at the Park Slope Pavilion, the projector went out a whopping four times, as the audio continued to play, revealing major plot points in the style of a radio play. It was the worst. The movie was cut short, and we are now standing in line for a refund. This is going to take a long time. The ticket booth is irate at the prospect of servicing these refunds, saying it is "incredibly stressful."

Could you please just reinforce how fucking horrific that shithole Pavillion Theater is?  We went to see Gravity and the projector stopped five times, they couldn't even finish the film and the morons that work there could not even deal with people, long lines for refunds, etc. Just a horrible place, shame on me for continuing to go there, that is why a stern reminder to others to stop being so fucking lazy and stop continuing to support that infestation.

Chloe Sevigny is your newest Park Slope celebrity neighbor

No matter how many roles she’s played in the past 18 years, I still think of Chloë Sevigny as “that girl from Kids." The movie used a lot real NYC “street kids,” including a few from Park Slope that my friends knew (not me, because I was too nerdy to hang out with that posse). Hey, remember when we had street kids in Park Slope? The good old days.

Yet the lack of those street kids probably played a big part in Sevigny's decision to move to Park Slope. That, and the mad street cred it will get her with the yuppies. After declaring “I’m still cooler than a lot of actresses,” in a Town & Country interview, Sevigny now has a lot to prove. And there’s no better way to prove you’re cool to the Town & Country crowd than leaving the East Village and coming to Brooklyn.
