Windsor Terrace Is One Step Closer to Becoming Park Slope

Oh how that title will rub people the wrong way. But think about it, especially those of you who live in the WT (I've been a resident for 13 years) you've seen the change. Not that I think it's all a bad thing. I'm just acknowledging that it's been happening. And this bit of news is sealing the deal.

Since I'm the master of burying the lede, let me now provide you with one: The Windsor Terrace Food Coop is going to happen. Or as the Daily News so artfully put it: "Brooklyn's budding food cooperative is nearing its first harvest."

This momentous news stems from an announcement that the fledgling coop is negotiating a lease agreement for a future home on Caton Avenue and East 8th Street (which is technically Kensington). The coop's leader Jack O'Connell says he's hesitant to announce the exact address for fear that someone may swoop down and make a better offer.

I personally strolled past the approximate location this morning and can't for the life of me see a potential space, although there is a pit of sand on the northwest corner which has a sign that says something like "commercial building" so maybe that's it. But there isn't anything close to a building there yet.

According to O'Connell, the search for a spot was tough because of rising rents in the Windsor Terrace/Kensington area. And the group had been stuck in a delicate sequence of events for this initiative to become a reality. To make sure the deal goes through, the coop needs 100 members by December 1, the yearly membership fee is $100. So if you're interested in becoming a member go here and sign up. The group has an email list of 750 people but couldn't actively solicit for fees until they had a site picked out. So far they say they're almost half way there.

O'Connell was cautious telling the Daily News, “Are we going to be able to pull this off? Well, we’ll find out.”

And guess who's is lending a hand to this rag tag group of coop youngens? That's correct, our very own Park Slope Food Coop that's who. They're even offering work credit to members who help out with the Windsor Terrace effort. Isn't that sweet? I think that's sweet.

So let's wish the folks at the Windsor Terrace Food Coop good luck and again if you're interested in getting in on the ground floor go over to the coop's website and sign up.
