Who Gives A Shit: Park Slope's Best Kept Secrets
Posted by: Allison | Friday, January 1, 2010 at 12:00PM
In the spirit of giving in the new year, I thought it might be nice if we all contributed some best-kept secrets of Park Slope, now that you BALLERS have probably recovered from your NYE hangovers (you, Meredith, robnyc, jaketaylor, etc???).
I'll start:
BEST FOOD:
- The steamed fish with ginger and scallion and truly stellar apple cinnamon ice cream at Moim make up for those ridiculously small dishes.
- The sugary/glazey one at 7th Ave Donuts. Soooo much better (not to mention cheaper), than Krispy Kreme.
- Octopus salad and gigantic fava beans at Blue Apron (and yes, even I am hard pressed to defend them when fellow BREEDERS block the aisle with their behemoth strollers).
BEST SLEDDING:
- The hill just south of the Picnic House in Prospect Park.
BEST EXTORTION:
- For those lucky enough (or not) to have wheels, no longer do you have to go to Borough Hall to plead those unbelievably unfair and obscenely expensive parking tickets. Now you can get that shit reduced when you pay online! Also “here to serve you online” for all those other crap-ass (and according to Erica, wholly deserved) petty violations—like not putting your recycling out right or shoveling the sidewalk.
BEST MAN CAVE/SOCIAL CLUB:
- Metropolitan Wargamers of NYC at 522 5th Street. Holy shit, I can’t believe I’ve lived here for so long and *just* found out about these dudes. Not that I’m much for mini war re-enactment, but I somehow find it comforting that these guys are in a basement somewhere in the belly of Park Slope.
Ok, your turn: tell us yours!
(ed note: I'm gonna jump in too and hijack this shit for a sec...)
BEST FOOD:
- I'm obsessed with having brunch at Scottadito. It's $14.95 for unlimited mimosas, and really delish food. Honestly, if you *just* drank the mimosas all morning it would probably be worth it, but when you factor in the tasty food, its quite a friggin deal. So yeah...we're here most Sundays.
- I dare you to not name your next child after the Grandma slice at Joe's Pizza (potential children's names: Gra(ha)m, Gramma, Myrtle).
- Fonda is, by far, the best Mexican I've had in Park Slope.
- Bierkraft sells this artisinal ice cream sandwich that is made of heroin cakes and cocaine ice cream. At least I think so, cause every day I wake up and every day when I got to sleep, that's all I can think about.
- Why doesn't anyone EVER talk about Tonio's? I mean, you walk in and feel like you are in a time capsule back to 1984. They generously use iceberg lettuce, and give you real butter pats with your bread instead of that fancy oil. But the food is surprisingly good, and its never, ever crowded. Also, the dude who owns the place (Tony!) always comes over and shakes your hand everytime you eat there. I mean!? I love the shit out of this place, and I don't care who knows it.
BEST PLACE TO BUY ANYTHING YOU NEED...EVER:
- Save on Fifth sells anything you might ever need, and its cheap AND they are nice there. Seriously, go move into a new apt, and then go there first before you hit up Target. If you don't see what you're looking for, don't be afraid to ask--the staff is awesome, and they know where all the good shit is.
BEST SPA TO GO TO WHEN YOU'RE LAZY AND DON'T FEEL LIKE GOING TO NYC, BUT WANT SOMETHING LUXE:
- D'mai Urban Spa is pretty amazing. It's not necessarily cheaper than anything you'd find in the city, but it feels like a *real* spa, rather than a cheapie Brooklyn alterna-spa. Also it smells fucking amazing in there.
BEST HAIRCUT:
- In fairness, I haven't tried all of the Park Slope salons, but I really dig Salon Harmony (I go to Danielle). Again, not really cheaper than NYC, but you also don't feel like you're settling there.
Ok, NOW its your turn: tell us some of your best kept Park Slope secrets!
