Whassup: Thank God I'm in Brooklyn Edition
I know many of you are flying out of here to eat flightless birds and have uncomfortable political discussions in somewhere that's not-New York -- but for those of you stuck 'round these parts over the holiday, there's still plenty to do. Welcome to Whassup: Thank God I'm in Brooklyn Edition!
* Wednesday, Nov. 23: '90's Pre-Turkey Jam, Bell House: Thanksgiving may see you sleeping in your old bedroom, but "Party Like it's 1999" lets you rock out to the jams that rocked that room with a DJ list full of '90's hits. 9pm, FREE.
* Friday, Nov. 25: CHIA's Dance Party, Barbes: Whether you gorged on traditional turkey and stuffing or downed a bottle of Jack to stave off the loneliness, you're going to need to work off the calories after Thanksgiving Day. Move your pumpkin-pie-stuffed tail to these Columbian sounds. 10pm, FREE (musician donations encouraged/considered awesome).
* Saturday, Nov. 26: Small Business Saturday, Fifth Ave: Friday may be black, but Saturday can be brown. That wasn't meant to sound racial. I just mean -- forget it...The Fifth Avenue BID is encouraging local goo-gah purchasing on National Small Business Saturday with a free bus shunting shoppers between Dean and 18th Streets. And, hey, there are also small businesses on 7th Ave. And I hear there are even other streets in Park Slope with places equipped with working cash registers. Hit up those retailers or ghosts will visit you on Christmas. Seriously. Bus runs 2-8pm.
* Sunday, Nov. 27: Open Mic, Freddy's: Once you get the last bits of stuffing out of your craw, you might have some post-Thanksgiving words to share. Spew them into the extremely open mic at Spoken Word New York, a monthly stage for poets, writers, singers, rappers, comedians, or anyone else with lungs, lips, and language. 8:30pm, FREE.
* Tuesday, Nov. 29: Komedy Karaoke, Union Hall: If you've ever gone to a karaoke bar and thought to yourself, "Yeah, it's good. But I'm not laughing enough," then "The Jukebox" is for you. Performers each share a bit, story, or written piece inspired by a song, then karaoke the shit out of said song. $5, 7:30pm.
* Wednesday, Nov. 30: North English, Rock Shop: Singer-songwriter Kathryn Musilek of North English has fleshed out her sound a bit recently -- her band now has two people. But, the songs are still quiet, sad, pretty, and sometimes about Iowa. These things matter to me in a song, and they might to you, too. $7, 7:30pm.
