Jay-Z Disowns Nets to Become Super Agent
Shawn Carter, aka Beyonce's husband, recently told the world he's taking a stab at a new career as sports agent. That's like the fifteenth career so far for Brooklyn's prodigal son. Unfortunately that also means Jay-Z can longer own a stake in the Brooklyn Nets (conflict of interests and so on).
The sales process for his shares has already begun. However, as a minority owner, Jay's 0.67 percent stake in the team should only go for about $350,000. In other words, it costs less to own a piece of the Brooklyn Nets than to own a studio apartment in Park Slope. But we can hardly expect the next owner of that tiny stake to make the impact Young Hov did on the NBA. Love it or hate it, Jay-Z became the driving force behind the Nets' move to Brooklyn and the Barclays Center.
"It would be disappointing [if Hov bounced]," Nets interim coach P.J. Carlesimo. “I wasn't close to it at all, but from what I've seen, it would be hard to overstate his importance in this all.”
Jay-Z doesn't want to hear us complaining, though. He even released a song telling us all how we can just shut the hell up about this and his trip to Cuba.
As for his future success as an agent, I imagine it won't be hard for someone who hangs out with the President of the United States to make million dollar deals. To paraphrase Jay's lyrics: he sold kilos of coke, I'm guessing he can sell sports superstars. In fact, he’s already signed Roc Nation’s first client from our neighbors in the Bronx, Yankees’ second baseman Robinson Cano. If I were an agent I would be a little worried right now. Scott Boras better watch his step or he may be the next contestant on the Summer Jam screen. [Here’s a link to explain this last reference]
