Whassup: Post-Valentine's Fuck Search Edition
Well, I hope you're all recovered from your day of chocolate and sensual lovemaking and/or Ben and Jerry's and sobbing, pathetic masturbation. Now, with Valentine's Day just a sick, sick memory, we can all turn our attention to more fruitful ventures: finding kooky, semi-ironic Brooklyn activities at which maybe we'll get laid. Welcome to Whassup: Post-Valentine's Fuck Search Edition:
* Ongoing: Mid-Brooklynite's Dream, Truffle Theatre Company: Recently the recipient of some Lincoln Center props, which called it "delightful" and "low-budget," this production of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" enchants the boozy forest at Cobble Hill bar 61 Local. It runs through Feb. 26. Evening and matinee showings, $5-15.
* Thursday, Feb. 16-Sunday, Feb. 19: SomethingatSouthpaw, Southpaw: This will officially be the last instance of my hastily constructed tradition of announcing one Southpaw event here until the place shutters. With the end coming Monday, the 20th, this is all there is, folks. Well, we close up with a four-nights-long shindig, at least: Americana Pie, a Thursday through Sunday run of roots, old-school country, and bluegrass singer songwriters and bands. Come stomp your boots with all the Southpaw-lovin' fervor youv'e got. 8pm Doors, $10 per night.
* Friday, Feb. 17: Make a Fucking Cutting Board, Makeville Studio: Heres' your chance to combine two Park Slope cultural tics: classes in which you make weird shit and a tremendous devotion to foodiness. It's a cutting board class. You were wondering how you were going to show up the guests to your next dinner party? Casually demonstrate the gorgeous, wooden cutting board you MADE YOUR DAMN SELF! Happening the next two Fridays.Knives out, motherbitches! 7-10pm, $160.
* Friday, Feb 17: Overflow Mag & The Skint Present "A Hot Winter Romp In Gowanus," Littlefield: Join DJ Rekha, Raya Brass Band and DJs Treetop & Shinobi for a night of drinking paired with the lovely sounds of Bhangra, Balkan Brass & Soul transcendent. 9PM-2AM, $7
* Saturday, Feb. 18: Lady Lamb the Beekeeper, Union Hall: Diminutive human folk pipe-organ Ally Spaltro, aka Lady Lamb the Beekeeper, highlights (for me, though she's not technically headlining) this night of crafty song crafters. She's an act it's best to hear live. You won't expect such a voice out of her, and it's worth it to experience in person. Especially in Union Hall's intimate space. 8pm, $8.
* Tuesday, Feb. 21: I Like You, Maude StorySLAM, Tea Lounge: FiPS' story-filled Tea Lounge monarch, Kerri Doherty, again hosts her monthly story slam. This edition features special guest storyteller Ted Travelstead, co-author of "Sex: Our Bodies, Our Junk," but all comers are welcome to take the stage in a friendly, low-pressure atmosphere. It's the perfect chance to get over a fear of public speaking, which usually outranks death in our lists of terrors. So, logically, you will also cease fearing death after telling your story. And, then there's no stopping your motorbike dynamite deliveryperson career. 7:30pm FREE.
* Tuesday, Feb. 21: Fat Tuesday, Bell House: A couple of party brass bands trumpet some N'Orleans aural spice into your face for Fat Tuesday. Class up the regular drink specials and ill-gotten beads by lending your ears to some authentic Louisiana musicianship. And, hey, you know what? If you want to show your tits while you're there, wanna know what has two thumbs and won't stop you? 8pm Doors, $8.
* Tuesday, Feb. 21: Slavic Soul Party, Barbes: Speaking of Mardi Gras venues, if you're into that, here's a perfect night to hit up Park Slope's adorable little Frenchy cafe, Barbes, and their adorably fun resident Eastern European party brass band, Slavic Soul Party. You may also lift your shirt here, but there's less space to disappear into the crowd if it doesn't go over well. So, fair warning. 9pm, $10 donation suggested.
