Whassup: Non-Shitty (?) Mooga Edition
So, is this Mooga thing actually...great? Or, at least, non-shitty? With musical acts announced Monday, the fest released another round of tickets on Tuesday. We got ourselves some Oates, some Roots, and a whole hell of a lot of other bands that I hope some of you know, 'cuz I don't. Anyway, I would like to comment that the ticket getting seemed to go more smoothly this time. Let's hope this bodes well for the actual thing. Welcome to Whassup: Non-Shitty Mooga Edition:
* Thursday, April 26: Late Night Library Read Off, South 4th Bar (Williamsburg): Joined-at-the-hipster lit bro Portland links up through the literary time warp with Brooklyn at Late Night Library's one-year party celebrating freshly-validated local scribes. Authors from each uber hip burg will read from their just-published works of fiction and verse. Readers from Portland will be Skyped into Brooklyn, and vice versa. 10pm, FREE.
* Saturday, April 28-Sunday, April 29: Sakura, Matsuri, Botanic Garden: One of the jewels of Park Slope, the Botanic Garden, hosts one of its signature events this weekend, a celebration of Japanese culture. Practice your best befuddled Bill Murray expression and shuffle amongst sword-fighting displays, J-Pop bands, and demonstrations by manga makers. 10am-6pm, $15 (adults).
* Saturday, April 28: Roots Cafe Plays Freddy's, Freddy's: If you know Roots Cafe in the South Slope, then you probably know the owner Jamey, because it's that neighborhoody of a place. Jamey and the other musically inclined Roots baristas take over nearby Freddy's, with sets of, you guessed it, roots music that's the aural equivalent of the cafe's grits. That's a compliment, btw. 8pm, FREE.
* Tuesday, May 1: And I am Not Lying Variety Show, Union Hall: Wanna not get bored? Go out to a show! Wanna not get bored at said show? Go to a variety show! That's the simple entertainment formula behind And I am Not Lying. Moth-style storytelling is at the core, but that core is surrounded by jokes (stand-up) and boobs (bad stand-up -- just kidding, burlesque). 8pm, $10.
* Tuesday, May 1: Punderdome 3000, Littlefield: There is so much dorky fun and fun dorkiness about this show, an amateur pun competition hosted by the Dangerfield-esque Fred Firestone and his awesomely exasperated daughter, Jo. You'll laugh, you'll groan, you'll perhaps make other noises. And then you will go home and tell people you went to an effing pun competition. 7:30pm, $7.
* SUMMER: Rooftop Films Lineup Announced: Get started planning your oh-so-cute NY equivalent of the summer drive-in: Rooftop Films just announced its schedule of flicks and music atop the skyline for the warm months. I can already picture all the romantic Instagrams you're all gonna snap.
