Whassup: Nigh Summertime Edition

Not sure why, but classic soul has always sounded like NYC in summer to me. So, I think it's appropriate that the year's first offering from Celebrate Brooklyn is a soul party. Check it out tonight (more below). Welcome to Whassup: Nigh Summertime Edition:

* Thursday, May 10: Beastie Bowl, BK Bowl: MCA. Damn, MCA. As FiPS' own Benjamin eloquently eulogized (hey, sometimes we're not ALL curse words and breeder bashing), Brooklyn lost a Beatle in the Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch last week. Brooklyn Bowl celebrates with MCA's Awesome: I Fuckin' Shot That, a film documenting the Boys' performance at MSG. With DJ'd Beastie tunes. 6pm Doors, FREE.

* Thursday, May 10: Soul Dance Party, BK Bridge: Celebrate Brooklyn, the folks behind the summer bandshell shows in the park, take on the spring with the first of three dance parties at the Bridge. Dance your way into a reasonable facsimile of swimsuit shape with this soul party, helmed by Booker T. Jones, former soul-mate of Otis Redding and Bill Withers. 7pm-10pm, FREE.

* Friday, May 11-Sunday, May 13: Bayou n' BK Fest, Jalopy: For three days, the sounds of New Orleans (or, as people trying to sound like they know what they're talking about say it, "Nawlins") fill Red Hook's olde tyme theatre. Cajun, Creole, and Zydeco performers twang the strings, with Louisiana food and musical workshops on the side. Various times. Visit their donation page to pre-score tickets.

* Saturday, May 12: Red Hook Immersion, Columbia St.: Ah, Red Hook. Am I the only one who feels like I'm in a little college town while in that neighborhood? All the little shops with the sort of old hippy vibe, the general atmosphere of Ikea-ness, the necessity to use busses. It's a cute little 'hood, iswhatimsayin, and here's your chance to give it a good old college weekend romance. Free Brooklyn brews, lobster roll specials, and an Instagram Safari sweeten the day. 12pm.

* Saturday, May 12: F$%$# Book Release, Community Bookstore: Jesse Andrews releases his curse-heavy YA novel, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. I just wish they swore in the YA books I read as a tween. That would have fuckin' ruled. 6pm, FREE.

* Monday, May 14: 10-Min Plays, Cocoa Bar: Park Slope's best spot for awkward second dates (trust me) opens its chocolatey arms to a group of new writers and directors with a series of 10-minute plays in the garden. Drink specials and sangria. 7pm, $5 + 1 drink.

* Tuesday, May 15: How I Learned in BK, Union Hall: The unstoppably charming Park Slope native Blaise Kearsley brings her popular storytelling series "How I Learned" back home for a special Brooklyn night. This month, writers and comedians tackle "How I learned to be a Grown-Up...Allegedly." The "Allegedly" tells you how drunk they, and you, will be. 7:30pm, $8.

* Tuesday, May 15: Maude Story SLAM, Tea Lounge: Want a chance to tell your own story? That's what "I Like You Maude" is for, the storyslam for the rest of us Park Slopers. Drop your name in the hat and then drop your truth on the Tea Lounge. Commandeered by FiPS' own Kerri Doherty, with special guest, comedian Ilana Glazer of Broad City. 7:30pm-9:30pm, FREE.

* SUMMER: Celebrate Brooklyn Full Lineup Announced! Yesterday, BRIC released deets on the full lineup for the summer bandshell shows in the park. Yes. It looks pretty sweet, with a Muppet sing-a-long, a double shot of Wild Flag and Mission of Burma, and a whole helluva lot more.
