Whassup: Hey June! Edition
If you're like me, you're still excreting BBQ from last weekend. (TMI? TMI.) That, along with the sweatiness of the last several days -- and the return of music in the park! (see below) -- means that another Park Slope summer is upon us. Wrap your sunburned arms around it with Whassup: Hey June! Edition:
* Ongoing: NEW Summer Classes!, BK Brainery: Did you know that we actually learn better in summer because the heat makes our brains more absorptive? THAT'S NOT TRUE! But, you can learn a bunch of other things that ARE true at Brooklyn Brainery's new bevy of summer classes. Take on the great aphorizing philosopher (and possessor of ALL the consonants) Nietzsche, re-learn the cursive you never mastered in third grade, bolster your arguments against climate-change deniers, and more.
* Thursday, May 31: Housing Works Bike Night, Brooklyn Brewery: Housing Works is a fantastic organization, and they've finally got a Brooklyn event I can pimp here. This celebration of Bike Month (I guess that's a thing?) fills you with $2 Brooklyn Drafts in support of BRAKING THE CYCLE, a NYC-to-DC ride supporting Housing Works' fight against homelessness and AIDS. 7:30pm.
* Friday, June 1-Saturday, June 2: Red Hook Fest, Red Hook: Red Hook is adorable. It's like a little town pasted on the side of Carroll Gardens. And this weekend, 150 dancers, musicians, and poets will be all up inside of Red Hook for the 19th Annual Fest. Friday, PS 15, 6:30-9:30pm and Saturday, Louis J. Valentino, Jr. Park, 12-7pm.
* Friday, June 1-Saturday, June 9: Do Good Right Here, Brooklyn: Come on, Brooklyn, put your liberal heart where your hands are and give back to the community. The Brooklyn Community Foundation is about to make it easy with a new website for searching volunteer opps -- and a host of related launch activities this week, from the Brooklyn Flea to Discover Bed-Stuy. Various times, FREE.
* Tuesday, June 5: BRIC Opening Night, Bandshell: Many people say that Memorial Day Weekend is the official start of summer. THOSE PEOPLE ARE STUPID. Summer officially begins with Celebrate Brooklyn's first bandshell show. And this is it -- raggae OG Jimmy Cliff will belt the first hot sounds of summer. 8pm, FREE.
* Tuesday, June 5: Geeking Out, Union Hall: Admit it, you loved Buffy just a little too much, and you have to restrain yourself from making Dr. Who references on first dates (or, throughout your marriage, as the case may be). Come. Here is a safe place. FiPS' own Kerri Doherty co-hosts this celebration of fanboys/girls, with writers, comedians, and storytellers sharing shameless tales of geekdom. Live long and prosper. 8pm, $8.
