Whassup: Here Comes the Halloweekend Edition

topical costume (via twistedsifter.files.wordpress.com)

You've got one week, Park Slope. One week to devise that perfect Halloween costume, the one that will make every Bride of Frankenstein and Sexy Cat (or Wolverine and Sexy Cop, depending on your proclivities) fall for you. No pressure -- but your choice of costume will decide what everyone thinks of you for the remainder of the year. Great costume: fun, creative person I want at my holiday parties. Lame costume: I will consider no longer following you on Facebook. So, reach down into the deepest wells of your creative psyche and dredge out something fantastic. Welcome to Whassup: Here Comes the Halloweekend Edition:

* Thursday, Oct. 24: HallowMEME Costume Party, Bell House: This is just what you need: a specific, SECOND Halloween costume to think of. But this one's all about Web memes, so expect to see Bell House swarming with Pedobears and Insanity Wolves. It'll be just like being on the Internet, except you will (probably) have your pants on. 8:30pm, FREE (with RSVP).

* Friday, Oct. 25: Not the Park, Prospect Park: In case you were planning a fairly frigid picnic on Friday in the park, NO YOU CAN'T!! Because Obama. The president will be visiting our fair park, because in these post-2008-Election days, he can no longer fill, say, Central Park. Anyway, maybe you can stake out a spot outside the park and catch glimpse of a helicopter or motorcade. Bring your "Hillary 2016" signs. Noon-6pm.

* Friday, Oct. 25-Tuesday, Oct. 29: Sandy Anniversary Film Series, BAC: This year's film festival at the Brooklyn Arts Council will mark the first anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, that bitch what fucked us up last Halloween. Screenings include opening night's "Eye of the Storm," a collection of shorts, and Tuesday's "From the Floodlines," a series of documentaries. Screenings at various locations in DUMBO and Williamsburg.

* Saturday, Oct. 26-Sunday, Oct. 27: Flea Market NEW SPOT, 20th and 4th: The P.S. 321 Flea Market has found a new home, morphing into the "South Slope Flea." Let's all ignore, for a moment, the unpleasant associations that "flea market" may suggest in the bedbug paradise that New York became a few years ago. And let's, instead, focus on how hipster cool it is to purchase things at a flea market. Particularly one in the cool end of Park Slope, where it has not (quite) become suburbia. Yet. Completely. 9am-6pm.

* Saturday, Oct. 26: 1-Day Writing Class, Green-Wood Cemetery: They say that in the written word, you can hear the dead speak. So, why not go hang out with the dead while you write words that future not-dead people will read after you become dead? A perfect combo. You'll take a guided scamper amongst Green-Wood's storied stones, then One Story's Editor-in-Chief, Hannah Tinti, will lead a writing workshop. Ideally, the many ages of dust, dirt and decay will inspire you to tell richly layered stories. Or maybe just some good old-fashioned goth poetry: "Death. Death. Darkness. My Soul. Why?" Stirring. 1:30pm-5pm, $75.

* Sunday, Oct. 27-Monday, Oct. 28: Upcycle Fest, Prospect Park: Come turn your old electronics into not-poisonous-waste. The Upcycle folks will repurpose old TVs, cellphones, smartphones, DVD players, printers, gaming consoles and more -- guaranteeing 100% data wipes. And, in case you were wondering, a data wipe is like a butt wipe, but if you pooped out information. Except this is REALLY thorough, so it's more like a data bidet or data-anal-bleaching. Anyway. Walk-in drop-off sites are at the 3rd St. Entrance and Grand Army Plaza safety zone, and drive-in drop-offs will be at Willink Entrance. 9am-2pm Sat, 8am-2pm Sun.

* Tuesday, Oct. 29: Eat for a Cause, BK Restaurants: As we told you Monday, you can totally pig out for good reasons next week. Join "The Good Night Out" and eat at participating Brooklyn restaurants to raise money to fight hunger. Slope restaurants include 12th Street, Dizzy's, Sheep Station, and more.

* Wednesday, Oct. 30: Muppet Vault: Monsters!, Union Hall: For a great start to your Halloweekend, snuggle up with some felt-covered monsters. The Muppets have the best monsters, be they Cookie or otherwise. Self-described geeky website "ToughPigs" will screen old monster-y clips from the Muppets, Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock and related bits of Jim Henson genius. It will make for one, ONE, awesome night, ah-ah-ah. (Sorry.) 8pm, $8.

* Thursday, Oct. 31: My So Called Prom, Bell House: The Bayside Tigers, a '90s cover band, did at least one other "My So Called Prom" at Bell House, and it was awesome. The dudes can definitely dial up some grunge. And since this one comes on Halloween, you are encouraged to dress as grungy as you wanna: ripped jeans, Doc Martens, and as much goddamn angst as you can fit on your face. 9pm, $15 DOS.
