Whassup: Fools No More Edition

fools (via cvrp2012.com)

I suppose some people must enjoy April Fool's Day, just as I am assured that there are sociopaths among us, though I don't identify with either group. Maybe this is just the bitter grapes of a gullible person, but that "holiday" can suck one. Now that it's over, we are all free to continue MOSTLY distrusting friends and strangers, rather than ENTIRELY distrusting them. Come partake of the fun that comes from not squinting warily at everyone you know. Welcome to Whassup: Fools No More Edition:

* Friday, April 5: Booze and Threads, Odd Twin: The purveyors of things vintage at Odd Twin know the best way to throw an anniversary party, or any party for that matter, is to bribe people to come with free alcohol. Hence, for their 4-year anniversary, the clothiers offer FREE beer and wine to go along with the sales. Come get drunk and go home with something you'll regret in the morning. Also buy some clothes. 6-10pm, FREE.

* Friday, April 5: Baby Soda, Barbes: Baby Soda is a jazz group with strong New Orleans roots. They perform and play music in a style that might feel familiar to your grandparents, another example of Brooklyn delightfully (or annoyingly, if you so please) reviving forgotten art forms. 10pm, FREE.

* Sunday, April 7: Electronics SAFE Disposal, Prospect Park: Disgarded electronics basically take poisonous shits all over the Earth. So, don't do that. Bring your old gadgets and gear to this disposal and recycling event, so you can be slightly less of a drain on the planet. 10am-4pm, FREE.

* Monday, April 8: Brooklyn Poet's Yawp, 61 Local (Cobble Hill): I'm not really sure what Brooklyn Poets is. It's an organization "for" poetry in Brooklyn. Well, I support such things as poetry and Brooklyn, and the group is quite active in the ridiculously vibrant BK literary scene. And now they are hosting an open mic and poetry class, in a very well-beered setting. You can come read your stuff, or take a class to write better stuff. And I'm pretty sure, once you get good at poetry, that's when the riches start rolling in. 7pm-9pm, $5.

* Tuesday, April 9: Bust Lady Laugh-In, Public Assembly (Williamsburg):Is anyone still seriously having the "Are women funny?" conversation anymore? Tina Fey alone should have put that to rest as a topic of genuine debate. Maria Bamford should have killed it. In case any doubters are left, come see a bunch of un-penised funny people do their thing under the aegis of "Bust" magazine. 8pm, $7.

* Thursday, April 11: Proclaimers, Bell House: Around every singular hit, there still exists a band that struggled long and hard (probably) to make that small mark. Come see the musicians that produced "500 Miles," which you undoubtedly nodded your head to at least once in the early '90s. I'm guessing they'll play it here. 9pm, $25.

COMING UP:

Sunday, May 26: The Shins, Williamsburg Park: The first concert of the summer(ish) season at Williamsburg Park will be the Shins, a band that some people in Brooklyn might have heard of. Go ahead and get those tickets now. 5:30pm, $55.90.
