Non-Profit Takes From Hollywood, Gives to Gowanus
Do you live in or around Gowanus? Did Hurricane Irene fuck your shit up? Why go to the Red Hook Ikea for a new kitchen set you can’t afford when you could have Edward Norton’s from Fight Club? Why overpay at Lowe’s to rebuild your fence when you could use spare lumber from the set of whatever Nicholas Cage movie is shooting in the ‘hood today?
An awesome non-profit called Film Biz Recycling is pitching in to help the community rebuild. I’m not fucking with you. Here’s their deal: Hollywood spends a lot on furniture, paint, lumber and other shit real people can use in their homes. After the movie shoot, most of it ends up in landfills. And Gowanus fucking hates landfills. So Film Biz Recycling swoops in, takes the good stuff and gets it to people in need. How’s that for activism, Hollywood? Yeah, thought so.
Right now Film Biz Recycling is helping residents who’ve been hurt by Hurricane Irene. If you’re one of those residents, get in touch with them. Even if they don’t have what you need right now, you can give them a wish list and they’ll keep an eye out for it.
