Naked Moms: A Temporary Solution to the Bus Strike Problem?

via npr.org

As New York City's bus companies and the drivers' union continue their talks to end the current bus strike, perhaps families affected can take a cue from a group of moms in Montserrat, Spain, where kids had to walk three miles down a busy highway with no sidewalks when their bus service was cut. Eva Marie Casa Sancho, a mother of three, wrangled a group of fellow "unemployed" moms and decided that their best bet for raising money to bring back the bus was to pose in their birthday suits for a calendar.

"It started as a joke, but then we realized it might just be the most effective way to raise money for our kids' transportation," Sancho says.

Sancho, a 41-year-old mother of three, is Ms. June.

"At first it was really embarrassing," Sancho says. "One of my photos was taken outside at the bus stop near my house — in November! It was so cold, and I was naked in the street, with my neighbors gawking."

But it worked. The pinup moms have raised $12,000 selling the calendars — enough to rehire the school bus through spring. They even sold copies to regional politicians who decided to cut the school bus service in the first place.

You have to admit, raising that much money in a town of 7,000 is pretty damned impressive. Of course, if I had my way, I'd make the dads shoot a calendar, too. Why should they get off the hook? So, come on, NYC parents! Show us what you got!
