My Three Favorite Park Slope(-ish) Breakfast Sandwiches
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Ergo, this will be the most important thing you read on the internet today. Let's just dive right on into my three favorite morning-time sandwiches, shall we?
1. My go-to breakfast sandwich is a standard, no-frills sausage, egg and cheese on a roll. Not on a bagel -- they're too chewy. Just a roll. For this, I have a particular fondness for 5th Ave. Bageltique. I've lived in Brooklyn for about 12 years, and I don't think I've ever ordered a bagel there. I don't think I've ever ordered anything else there, actually. Why do I like their sausage, egg and cheese on a roll? I don't know. What is it about that sandwich that is so special? Nothing. But they make it well, it's (in my mind) a classic New York breakfast order, and that's where I go for that sandwich. Or, maybe it's just that I'm too lazy to walk any farther than that. Argue with me in the comments, if you must.
2. My standard Saturday morning routine involves making an early morning trip to Costco on 3rd Avenue to stock up on spinach dip and giant cube-shaped bottles of Jim Beam. I go before the crowds hit. Since it's too early for them to have the samples out, my Costco outing usually includes breakfast at the food window. Until recently this consisted of either a hotdog special (a buck fifty, comes with a fountain drink and all the relish and mustard you can stand), or a slice of pizza. But there's a new menu item at Costco. A turkey provolone sandwich with pesto mayo, toasted on a ciabatta roll. Holy Christmas! This sandwich fucking rocks my face off. I have a new Saturday morning breakfast.
3. Talde has quickly become my new favorite Park Slope brunch. For those of you who can't conceive of Asian food for breakfast, that's great. It's less of a wait for me. The last time I went I was eagerly looking forward to the short rib tacos. Those tacos are so good, just thinking about them gives me a half-chub. But they were no longer on the menu. Because I'm a loyal Dale Talde fan, I decided not to become angry. Instead, I gave his Brooklyn Cheesesteak Bao a shot. It was on the menu in roughly the same spot where the tacos had previously been. Lookit. I don't know what makes this a "Brooklyn" cheesesteak. I don't know why it's in a bao. All I care about is that it is really delicious, and it's right up there with my other favorites on that brunch menu (the bacon pad thai and the Korean wings and waffles, if you must know).
There. You've got three solid options for breakfast sandwiches. Now go eat them!
