Maurice Sendak is alive! Just kidding, but they are naming a school after him.

What the hell does that mean, you ask? A whole slew of Charlie Sheen circa 1989 look-alikes with absurd, zig-zag hair cuts are going to be gallivanting around the neighborhood all of a sudden? Of course not; don’t be ridiculously stupid.

What it means is P.S. 118, the new school opening to relieve overcrowding at P.S. 321 and P.S. 107, will be named after the late Maurice Sendak, author of “Where the Wild Things Are.”

P.S. 118, the new school opening this fall on Fourth Avenue and Eighth Street, will be called the Maurice Sendak Community School after the famed children's author, said Elizabeth Garraway, the new school's presumed principal. "We want to be a place where kids are flexible thinkers and they step outside of the box, and Maurice Sendak was known for his creativity," Garraway said.

In my opinion, it’s pretty cool to have a school in the Slope named after such a great and strangely imaginative children’s book author like Maurice Sendak, who was born in Brooklyn. However, if he were alive to be aware of it, I feel like he’d be disappointed by the lack of creativity in the name “the Maurice Sendak Community School.” Did they even TRY to come up with something reminiscent of the guy’s essence? Like, “Where the Wild Things Learn” or some genius shit like that. Yeah, that would’ve been much cooler.

Anyway, unfortunately, whoever was in charge of the naming clearly phoned it in, so let’s hope they at least have tons of monster murals painted all over the walls to make up for it. Also, the principal should always be wearing a onesie wolf costume and a crown. I’m like, a hundred percent sure that’s how Maurice Sendak would have wanted it to be.
