Luck Be A Lady, Tonight!
If you’re looking to multitask this fine hump day, have I got the place for you! Sena Braiding and Beauty Salon offers its customers the rare chance to get their hair did and try their hand at illegal gambling, simultaneously. It’s pretty much just like Vegas…except it’s on Pacific Street, and the only neon lights shine from the Barclay Center and Target, and the dancing fountains of the Bellagio are simulated with open fire hydrants.
The salon first made the police blotter last May after a confidential informant placed wagers on a “game of chance.” The search warrant and resulting raid produced the arrest of the individual suspected of running the illegal gambling operation. Gambling slips and betting devices were also confiscated. No back-alley craps near my brownstone!
The NYPD delivered a final one, two punch on January 17th when they filed a complaint against Sena with the Brooklyn Supreme Court, requesting that the salon be shut down for a year for being a public nuisance. Wouldn’t it be great if you could do that with your in-laws? The complaint names Urban Sales Corp. as the owner of the building and a defendant in the case, calling for all defendants to pay a $1,000/ day penalty for each day they knew of the illegal gambling. That’s a lot of braids!
The owner of the cash only (surprise, surprise, no paper trail) salon declined comment, while muttering “Sue me, sue me, what can you do me,” but a local resident and customer reported never having seen gambling, just an occasional prayer meeting.
