Funding the Farm: Applewood Needs Your Help
We recently reported that the Slope's own APPLEWOOD restaurant owners David and Laura Shea have planned to bring their farm-to-table mentality even closer to home by just owning the whole table AND farm. The couple has completed the intial farm buying, but now are asking for the community's help in funding some other projects at the farm. Utilizing global funding platform Indiegogo.com, the Shea's have set up a $15,000 fundraising goal to complete their operational needs. As of the time of this post, they've raised $5,580 with 35 days to go.
So where does your money go if you choose to donate? Your moolah will be used to buy materials to build chicken coops, rabbit hutches, a beehive, and other products that will help supply Applewood with farm-fresh ingredients from the Shea's new Hudson Valley farm. They've also set up a donation reward structure for people who choose to throw in some cash to the cause, from a jar of farm-fresh pickled veggies to two seats at the first "Meet the Farmers" dinner hosted by the Shea's.
I am all for supporting locally grown food and restaurants that pay attention to the quality of their ingredients and processes, so it's good to see one of our very own neighborhood haunts taking this seriously. I just wish they'd let me come work on the farm for a day (mostly to fill my lifelong beekeeping dream).
For more information check out their Indiegogo page, where they have update images, video, the story behind the farm, and the progress of the donations.
Good luck to the Shea's!
