Did Anyone Notice the "Kindness Revolution" in Prospect Park Last Weekend?

Patrick Fromuth and his group, NYC's RAK (Random Acts of Kindness) arrived in the Slope last weekend. They'd like everybody to smile and...that's it. They just think smiles would make the world a better place. Are they secret plants of the dental industry? No. They're just dirty hippies who think New Yorkers are mean.

So, what do they do at a NYC RAK meet-up? Here are some examples:

• holding doors open for strangers

• giving out free hugs and high fives to those who want them

• throwing a mini party in an elevator

• writing and posting anonymous stick-notes with encouraging messages

I'd like to respond to Patrick and NYC's RAK. You handing out flowers for smiles is a massive waste of time. It's childish and insulting to people who do real volunteer work. You could be handing out meals or painting classrooms. I'll pet your dog but I'm not sitting in your drum circle no matter how good your weed is. I'm not going to smile for you because I do not like you. And the only reason I'd try to get you to smile for me is so I can jam a scuba tank in your mouth and shoot it with a rifle from the mast of a sinking ship.

So what do you guys think? Is NYC's RAK mission a foolish one? Or is being the change you wish to see in the world the best way to advance your cause? (Gandhi never really said that.)
