NYC Marathon-gate: What would you do?

The ING New York City Marathon will go on as planned this Sunday, November 4, despite power outages currently happening in all of downtown New York, and sheer devastation remaining in Staten Island, Coney Island, the Jersey Shore, Breezy Point, Long Island, the Rockaways, and a shit ton of other places in the tri-state area.

Organizers (The New York Road Runners ) have said that this year's marathon is "dedicated to the City of New York, the victims of the hurricane, and their families." And they've adjusted the marathon plans to "ensure our planning doesn't affect any recovery efforts." Sole focus is being put on Marathon Sunday, meaning the opening ceremony and Saturday's NYRR Dash to the Finish Line 5K have been cancelled. New York Road Runners revised their cancellation policy too, and "established ways for everyone to support the relief effort through charitable donations."

How to take the MTA to work today

I'm grateful for many things, post-Sandy. One, that my friends and family are all safe. Two, that I live in the greatest city in the world, with heroes working overtime to help those in need and get our city back up and running. And three, that my office and the e-mail servers that control my work e-mail is located below 40th Street in Manhattan. No power = no work. Yay!

But for those of you who are forced to head into Manhattan for work today, there's some good news. As of 6AM this morning, the MTA is back up and running in limited capacity.

Here's a map of what's running right now.

Don't get it twisted. There's no trains running between Park Slope and lower Manhattan yet. Starting tomorrow morning, the Army Corps of Engineers is bringing in 250 (!!!) high-speed pumping devices to help clear out the water from the tunnels. Once that's done we'll have a better understanding of when we'll get subways back up and running from Brooklyn to Manhattan.

FiPS Exclusive: Crespella to open second location in South Slope

Photo via www.designworklife.com

There are lots of places in this neighborhood to get coffee, but Crespella (321 7th Avenue at 9th Street) will always have a place in my heart because of their super tasty, highly-addictive, Oh-My-God-I-Want-To-Marry-You crépes. Which is why I'm extra excited to hear that Crespella is opening a second location right here in the Slope.

Good Riddance, Summer: 5 Things I Hate About The Worst Season Of Them All

Some people totally love summertime: the sunshine, the beaches and the fun outdoor activities. I am not one of those people.

I will gladly take a blizzard with unplowed streets and dirty snow piles over the stinking underground steam room of a summer subway station. I’d rather be bundled up for warmth than half naked, sweating my ass off in yet another Park Slope restaurant with inadequate air conditioning. Besides… I look really cute in layers.

So with the summer season unofficially behind us, let’s take this time to wish the hot, humid, and all-together disgusting summer months a big, fat goodbye by doing what this site does best: bitching. Here are the 5 things I totally hate most about summer (and after the jump, head to the comments section and give me yours!)
