I give up: what the hell are these?

I’d like you all to take a minute and look at the above image. Perhaps you’ve seen this before? It’s 1 of 30 or so objects of the same kind located up and down 5th and 7th avenue. Sometimes the traffic cone is there. Other times, it’s just a black concrete square with four metal pipes poking out on each end. For the past two months I have been trying to figure out what the hell these things are supposed to be, and it’s driving me nuts.

Cool Or Not Cool: Reading The Newspaper At Brunch?

This past weekend I had brunch with a few friends at Juventino. Halfway through my meal (cage-free truffled eggs with a side of cheese polenta, btw), I turned around and noticed that the couple sitting next to us was reading the Sunday Times while waiting for their food. Both were IMMERSED in their respective newspaper sections. They weren't talking. They weren't looking at one another. Hell, they were hardly even touching.

There didn't seem to be any bad blood between them. No noticeable tension or arguments. Yet I found it really odd that they had gone out of their way to go out to a restaurant, and yet they sat in silence. Shouldn't they be talking? Catching up on their lives? And reading the goddamn paper at home?

Who Gives a Shit: Do you hate on businesses you've never stepped foot in?

Looks like Harry Boland's Pub is now for sale, after being closed down by the Department of Health at the beginning of June. And I'm totally happy about it, despite the fact that I've never in my life stepped foot inside of it.

See, I walked by HB's (9th Street between 4th/5th ave) every single day, two times a day. And I've always hated it. From the awful colors to the shitty music to the nonsense hanging around outside - it's all pissed me off. Have I ever tried to go in there? Check it out for myself? Hell no. I judged that book by it's cover!

How to avoid your own sexting scandal: Nudie Pic Edition!

Hot on the heels of Weinergate and the leaked naughty photos of Blake Lively that no one seems to give a shit about, Park Slope has it's own little nudie photo scandal going on right now.  

A close friend of mine is a bartender at one of the Slope's most popular bars. One night as he was closing down, he came across a cell phone left on the cushion of one of the couches. Hoping he could help return the phone, he looked at the recent call log and tried the last few numbers called. It was about 4:30am, so it wasn't much of a surprise when no one picked up. He thought, Maybe I'll check the pictures, see if I know who this is. After all, this bar is filled with regulars. Sounds like solid reasoning, eh?

Well... he didn't know who it was. But the pictures he found? Let's just say, they helped him get to know her much better ("Click to Read More" will get you a heavily-pixelated, barely NSFW photo).
