Lisa Polansky To Close By End of the Year

I'm sure many of you are looking at that headline and thinking, "What the hell is a Lisa Polansky?" You know that cluttered looking women's/kids clothing/shoe store on Seventh Ave. between Carroll and President that seems to have no name because there's no signage? That's Lisa Polansky, a Park Slope instiution -- for 40 years, apparently -- and now it's closing.

I saw this sign on my way home last night, and gasped. It took me years to actually go inside, because it looked so cramped in there, but once I did it was the only place I went to get shoes for my daughter. Lisa and her staff were always really kind and helpful, and had a steady supply of Chuck Taylors, Bogs and Bear Paws (...and clogs, and flip flops, and faux Birkenstocks, and so on, and so on).

Caption This Park Slope Photo!

A friend of FIPS sent in this photo of car on 5th Street between 5th and 6th. Not so sure it needs a caption, but it's definitely more fun than the usual "this is where I vacation" stickers.

Mysterious Dumpster Diving at Union St. Union Market

Image via UnionMarket.comWe heard from a friend who regularly walks by Union and 6th Avenue around 9pm on Wednesdays that there were some unusual doings outside Union Market, and we did a brief interview.

Tipster: There are 3 or 4 women wearing headlamps and going through the garbage cans outside the market. They take uneaten discarded food out and bag it. Last time I was there, one of them had a stack of those prepared salads in those plastic clam-shell food containers.

FIPS: how are they dressed, were they “street people”?

Tipster: no, they were dressed “normally.”

FIPS: and how old were they?

Tipster: I don’t know – 30s maybe?

Park Slope Craigslist Blotter

FEAR: Plague of Rats

Yo, do you live near the 7th Avenue B/Q station? Have you noticed people being overtaken by waves of rats? This poster wants to get together a neighborhood rat watch. You'll have to bring your own bat with a chain wrapped around it. Also last summer I wrote something about rats in Park Slope and somebody flamed me in the comments that there aren’t any. “Not in my perfect neighborhood, buster!” So I’d like to extend a hearty fuck you to that person. Hope these monster rats eat all your cereal.

RIDE SHARE: Wagons west!

This poster isn't going to ride with you. But if you have space in your U-Haul heading west, they'd sure like to get their stuff up in that. They'll chip in on gas if you are willing to stop in Montana. Montana is not on the way to California. Looking at a map I don't even think you'd drive through it to get to Washington.
