9 Questions: Seryn, The Co-Owner of Flirt
9 Questions is our semi-regular column in which attempt to get to the heart of someone's down-n-dirty "Brooklyn-ness," (or lack thereof), with the same nine simple questions.
Meet Seryn: the co-owner of one of our fave, favorite-y, favorite-ist Park Slope stores: Flirt.
Name: Seryn Potter
Age: 33
Job: Co-Owner Flirt Brooklyn, Inc./Co-Designer of Flirt Brooklyn clothing line
1. Describe Park Slope in 5 words:
Supportive, Eclectic, Creative, Conscientious, Involved
2. Why do you live in Brooklyn?
I moved to NYC over ten years ago to pursue a career in music and wound up finding a two bedroom apartment in the South Slope for $800! It was huge and had a backyard and was an avenue away from the F train. It also flooded every time it rained. Despite this fact I really had no desire to live anywhere but Brooklyn from that point on. I felt at home in Brooklyn. I come from a very small town and maybe it was the sense of community that I gravitated toward. Brooklyn is big and vast, but it is also cozy and has a camaraderie I respected immensely.
3. Which subway line do you frequent most? On a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being "I hate it with the fire of a thousand hot burning suns" and 1 being "its the best thing that's ever happened to me since the first time I got laid" how would you rate said subway line?
My line is the F and I have to say I don’t mind it too much. I’d rate it about a 7 on account of the incessant track work on the weekends . I do have a little trouble with the 2 seat/3 seat combo, as well. It’s nice to sit looking out the window if you can snag a window seat but sometimes you have to squeeze in between people to get over to it. And then when your stop comes if the person next to you isn’t getting up, the chances of clunking them in the head with your bag is pretty good (especially if you are me and you carry a bag large enough for a weekend getaway to go get a manicure). And that’s not good for anyone involved. Neither clunker nor clunkee...or the really big bag.
4. Ever have any NY celeb run ins?
I’ve actually had a few. Most recently was one of the funniest, though. I was walking down 5th Ave in the Slope toward Flirt when a very attractive woman was walking toward me pushing a stroller. Of course I see a lot of neighborhood faces everyday from the shop on the street, and if I pass customers on the street I usually recognize them as customers (although sometimes it can actually be people I’ve met under different circumstances that I assume look familiar because they are customers). That can be awkward occasionally. Anyway. So I’m looking at this woman coming toward me and I know she isn’t a friend so she’s definitely got to be a customer but I’m not recalling interacting with her in the shop and at this point, of course, now I’m just staring, but I figure I’ll just give a nod and smile and she’ll realize I’m the girl who works at Flirt and she’ll smile back. So as we pass, after kind of gawking at her, I give her this smile and nod and it’s mere steps later that I realize it’s not a customer. It’s Maggie Gylenhaal. I must have looked completely tactless just eyeballing her as she was out and about in her neighborhood. Maggie, if your reading this, I wasn’t REALLY staring at you.
5. Favorite Blog (aside from ours, duh)?
I spend a lot of time on Brownstoner. I even comment sometimes. Can you guess my username?
6. Hunan Delight or Red Hot?
I’d have to go with Red Hot although I rarely eat Chinese takeout anymore. However, I can rank every Indian restaurant in Park Slope according to a combination of standards I’ve spent way too much time thinking about.
7. If Park Slope were a tasty cocktail, which tasty cocktail would it be and why?
I’d have to say a Mojito because it is my favorite cocktail, and Park Slope is my favorite neighborhood.
8. Are you a:
yuppie?
hippie?
Wall street asshole?
vegan?
Lovocore?
Communist?
Parent?
Medical Marijuana advocate?
Geez. Of all of them I’d have to say hippie but I think I’m too irritable to truly accept that title.
9. Will you be our friend?
I would love to be your friend. When are we going to Red Hot?
