BREAKING: 'Gypsy' Becomes Momentarily Enjoyable

I never in a million years thought I'd say this - but I wish to christ I had been at this performance of Gypsy.

Check out the audio above - Diva Patti LuPone becomes psychotically enraged when a theatergoer dares to snap pictures of her during a performance. She stops the whole fucking show to scream like a lunatic and lecture this retarded couple, probably some redneck tourists from Nebraska, whose greatest sin in my mind was to give a fuck about Patti LuPone.

Thank jesus someone was illegally recording the whole thing! Ah, the irony; just goes to show why everyone should record everything that ever happens to them 100% of the time - I mean, what if some shit like this goes down??

Epic, right? What do you think, is Patti LuPone your new hero, or an unprofessional hasbeen sociopath?

Embarrassing. Completely unprofessional - so much for the show must go on.

My favourite is the nervous clapping.

Yeah, the nervous clapping. Exactly, anon. That's what is striking.

First people were all supportive and applauding in their support of civility. Then the clapping stepped down to "oh my gawd this bitch is crazy" to "let's egg this kook on see if she eats a rat on stage."

She would have torn John Roberts head off if she were being sworn-in as president.

Humans. Fuck yeah!

Long time reader, first time poster.

Go Patti! I've been to too many shows where ignorant or rude audience members treat a live show like it's their TV, when in any live performance it's a give and take between performer and audience. And, hell, it's LIVE - shit happens, you break that 4th wall, you move on. Besides, doesn't anyone else think her wacky behavior was actually totally in character for Mama Rose?

Good for her, that'll teach some of these bumfuck hay seeds a lesson. If you don't see flash going off in an event, then common sense should tell you chedder bob that photography is not permitted or frowned upon.

That nervous clapping was like watching the reaction of kids who go to a friend's house for dinner and then a family argument breaks out and they don't know what the hell to do but act like it's not happening.

i think she's just crazy. its just a fucking picture for christsakes. and isn't it the usher's job to take care of that...not the star? she should have never broke character to yell at people, and totally sounds like a psycho.

you go, P-lu! she gave bumfuck a taste of some real, honest-to-gooness nyc love, and every other podunk in the audience a story to tell for the rest of their boring, miserable lives...

gimme a break dory - i'm with you claire - this bitch is a psycho.

Unacceptable for a professional on the stage. Absolutely unacceptable. It is not some stage diva's place to preach at an audience.

She talks about the audience respecting the theatre. What she did shows a totally lack of respect for the theatre.

Fascinating! I agree totally that everything should be recorded all the time because this shit is priceless.

Funny, too, because I LOATHE Patti LuPone and her outsized ego - saw her in Noises Off where she did the worst English accent I have ever heard anybody do. Stories of her getting drunk during Les Mis are legendary. I have heard that she was very good in Gypsy, though. But that's not the funny part.

No, the funny part is that I listened to this totally intending to see what a psycho bitch Patti was and came away completely on her side. I perform as a musician at bars, restaurants, corporate events, etc 6 nights a week. Many places I play are busy sports bars with hundreds of huge LCD TVs. At times I try to aim my material at LCD too (Lowest Common Denominator) to make the most tips and bring in the widest audience. Occasionally targeting a niche works better, but more often than not it is Margaritaville that brings in the bucks.

You would not believe how rude people are. They think I am a television and stand directly in front of me and shout and talk and sometimes put their coats on my PA system. I have had people put drinks and lit cigarettes on my equipment, lean on my PA while I'm playing, and then get publicly angry at me when I said "Please don't do that". Also, I'm damn good at what I do. I have practiced for years and years to get as good as I am. People come up and ask if they can sing, which in certain situations to me is the ultimate insult. Imagine trying to get up and sing on stage at a Broadway show!

Good for Patti standing up to that bullshit! It's freakin ridiculous to have to do a Broadway show with flash bulbs going off. People who don't do it have no idea what kind of concentration and focus it requires. Good for her for not just taking it and being "professional". She's a human being too, and deserves respect. I disagree that respect for the theatre means taking it all the time. People are animals and sometimes need a dose of their own medicine. Good for her.
