WHO GIVES A SHIT: WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR CHANUKAH SUPPLIES IN PARK SLOPE?
Photo via ninedaves. And yep, these Fish's Eddy "heroes of the Torah" glasses DEF make fantastic Christmas gifts.
Hey chosen people: there are only a couple of more days until the festival of lights, aka Chanukah, aka Hanukkah starts on Tues night, and if you're anything like my lazy ass, you've done absolutely nothing to prepare.
Well, fear not lazy Jews!
There are quite a few spots around Park Slope that you can hit up to get your Heeb on AND keep it local.
My two favorite spots were Little Things on 7th Ave and Scardey Kat on 5th Ave.
LITTLE THINGS TOY STORE
145 7th Ave (btwn Carroll & Garfield)
718-783-4733
Little Things has a jam-packed Hanukkah section busting at the seams with all sorts of options. And they keep their Chan supplies front and center in the store, not hidden in some back, cobwebbed corner like some other spots I visited (*points also for a sign in the window that said "2 days to Hanukkah!"). They have both fancy and regular candles for your menorah, dreidels in lots of sizes and shapes (even one that lights up!), Hanukkah gelt, decorations, toys, "baby's first Hanukkah" crap and even bulbs for your elecric menorahs. They pretty much have everything. It was definitely one of the biggest and well stocked Hannukah sections I came across.
SCARDEY KAT
232 5th Ave (between Union & President)
718-623-1839
There are lots of choices here as well, as Scardey Kat's no slacker when it comes to Hanukkah supplies. They've got all the basics (candles, dreidels, etc) as well as lots of other cutesy stuff like Hanukkah holiday cards, decorations, and great stuff for the kiddos including puzzles, games, blah, blah, blah.
KEY FOOD
various locations
Key Food keeps shit simple: they have Hanukkah candles. That's it. And these ain't those fancy, chi chi ones either. I suppose you could also get Manischewitz Latke mix while you're there, but let's get real: you've been shredding organic potatoes from the Coop since early this morn for your homemade latkes, haven't you?
POSSIBILITIES ON THE SLOPE (or Toys or whatever the hell it's called now)
131 7th Ave (between Caroll & Garfield)
718-399-6402
These guys had a fairly nice selection of the more colorful, tall tapered candles (i.e. not the stuff at Key Food) as well as some chocolate Hanukkah lollipops, and some other basics. But there wasn't a ton of stuff there, and I would likely stick with Little Things just up the block if you are specifically looking for Hanukkah supplies.
LION IN THE SUN
232 7th Ave (between 3rd and 4th)
718-369-4006
If you are looking for Hanukkah holiday cards, there are a few great choices here. They even have a couple of options for Hanukkah party invites, as well as a super cute paper dreidel gift card holder.
PROSPECT GARDENS PHARMACY
89 7th Ave (Union & 7th ave)
718-638-4030
It's no surprise that the home of the creepy all-night Christmas music is not exactly Hanukkah headquarters. They do have a fairly large box of Hanukkah wrapping paper shoved in the corner, as well as a Hanukkah soap dispenser for your bathroom. Yes I am so very serious.
RITE AID
249 7th Ave (btwn 5th and 6th Streets)
718-768-9567 (though I wouldn't bother calling, cause there will definitely not be anyone there that's capable of helping you)
Rite Aid has blocked off virtually half of their store for Christmas supplies, with floor-to-ceiling shelves of Christmas candy, Christmas lights, Christmas wrap, Christmas games, Christmas cards and Christmas toilet paper. And yet I did not see a single solitary, mofo Hanukkah supply in that entire joint...and I looked pretty hard. I suppose that maybe they're there somewhere, but since there was no one there to help me find it, and that store looks like a bomb went off pretty much 24/7, I was left feeling like Rite Aid isn't losing any sleep over making sure that their Jewish customers are well supplied to celebrate the miracles of Hanukkah.
PARK SLOPE FOOD COOP
782 Union Street (Between 7th and 6th Aves)
718-622-0560
Needless to say, I have no fucking clue what's going on at the Coop. However, when I asked Twitter for some suggestions around the nabe where I could find Hanukkah supplies, I learned that the Coop does, indeed, stock "free trade chocolate Hanukkah gelt." Uhm....yeah.
SPECIAL MENTION: SHELSKY'S SMOKED FISH
251 Smith Street
718-855-8817
Shelsky's is an appetizing and specialty food shop that opened up earlier this year in Carroll Gardens. Inspired by the old shops that used to dot the streets of the Lower East Side, owner Peter Shelsky said that his shop came about because “I was tired of having to schlep over the bridge to Russ & Daughters.” While I've been seriously dying to try their lox and whitefish salad and all that other delicious Sunday bkfst stuff, I was really impressed with the special Hanukkah menu they cooked up. They have traditional latkes, vegetarian latkes (fried in canola oil instead of schmaltz), celery root and sweet potato latkes, and even gluten free potato latkes (holy shit, do you know your market Shelsky's). They also have all the latke toppings, including homemade apple horseradish sauce, as well as chopped liver and anything else you could possibly want. I will def be putting in my Hanukkah dinner order tout de suite.
Ok, Park Slope: what did we miss? Where are all you Jews gettin your Hanukkah shit?
