What's Park Slope Watching on Netflix?
When we get bored around these parts, we get nosey. We're too lazy to check your mail, so instead we decided to see what the most popular Netflix movies are in the Slope. You can check out the top 25 here (but only if you get the DVD package. Sorry, streamers). Turns out you aren't just re-watching the Harry Potter series or drooling over Ryan Gosling's abs in Crazy Stupid Love as expected.
1. New York Stories (1989)
Topping the list is the 1989 anthology ode-to-NYC from Woody Allen, Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese. Like a masturbatory session, this movie is equally an expression of self-love and disappointment.
2. Crooklyn (1994)
Another NYC-centric entry from the 11217 zip code! We won't judge you for renting Spike Lee's semi-autobiographical hit about growing up in Brooklyn because aside from being critically acclaimed, this movie is a great watch.
3. Patti Smith: Dream of Life (2008)
The 2008 documentary follows Smith on the road and interlaces clips of her performances with stream-of-consciousness interviews. We need a part two on her recent love/hate relationship with the Chelsea Hotel.
4. Paris, Texas (1984)
Having never seen this rugged 1984 movie, all we can point out is that it's not about New York. We hear it has beautiful cinematography.
5. The Mirror (1975)
An artsy film by Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky that uses both color and black-and-white film to tell a story about the mysterious protagonist.
Also on the list is Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing (1989), Stranger Than Paradise(1984), and Terrence Malick's Days of Heaven (1978) AND Badlands (1973). Nothing unusual for the cerebral crowd that resides in the Slope, but what I really want to know is who's watching Pumping Iron(1977), Arnold Schwarzenegger's bodybuilding documentary??? 'Cause it's on the list.
On another note, HBO GO is now open to Time Warner subscribers. Has anyone checked it out? You can watch Season 2 of Boardwalk Empire on this bad boy.
