Whassup: Motherfucking Gourd Season Edition
As I'm sure you're all aware, we're deep in the midst of decorative gourd season. Motherfuckers. But don't worry, should your arranging of shellacked vegetables not completely fulfill your entertainment needs, there's plenty else to do as well. And, holy shit, is there ever -- It's a full lineup this week, folks. Welcome to Whassup: Motherfucking Gourd Season Edition:
* Friday, Oct. 14 - Saturday, Oct. 15: Americana Pie, Southpaw: Regular readers of Whassup (meaning, probably, myself and the editor of FIPS) know that I have a soft spot for country and roots music in our 'hood. Well, here comes another festival of that olde tyme shite. Two nights of Americana at Southpaw:
* Friday: The Gay Ole Opry, "A Queer Country Music Festival." 8pm.
* Saturday: Brooklyn County Fair, with roots music headlined by Gansta' Grass, who meld bluegrass instrumentation and hip hop. I mean, so that's a good gimmick, right?
* Saturday, Oct. 15: Forgotten NY Tour, Greenwood Cemetery: Get all pre-spooked for Beggar's Night by learning about the dead people guarded by green parrots in South Slope. Visit the headstones of an Al Capone aide, early baseball stars, and "the man who introduced showgirls to America." Note: that's showgirls with a little "s," not a capital "S." (Unfortunately). Contact kevin@forgotten-ny.com if you'd like to join. 10:30 am, $25.
* Saturday, Oct. 15: Badass Doggie Adoption, 13th St: The same folks who tugged your most puppy-eye-vulnerable heart strings last week, will have cages full of treacherously cute little things at the 13th St. Block Party (b/t 8th Ave and PPW). Come adopt a badass pup. If the sweetness of the thing doesn't get you, remember this: puppies will get you laid. Whether you want them to or not. It's just going to happen. 11am-6pm.
* Saturday, Oct. 15: Chaplin Rocked, PS 10: A master of the strings, experimental guitarist Marc Ribot, live-scores THE master of physical comedy, Mr. Charlie Chaplin, in this showing of The Kid. $15 suggested donation (adults), 3pm.
* Sunday, Oct. 16: Last Food Truck Rally, GAP: As gourd season motherfucking commences, so food-truck-rally season motherfucking closes. Turn, turn, turn. Catch the last gathering of mobile deliciousness of the year. 11am-5pm.
* Monday, Oct. 17: Sci Shorts, Bell House: The NYC Imagine Science Films Fest, in collaboration with beloved Slope nerd gathering Secret Science Club, presents "Controlled Experiment," a night of short flicks inspired by beakers, supercolliders, and lack of high school popularity. 7:30 Doors, FREE.
* Tuesday, Oct. 18: I Like You, Maude Story Slam, Tea Lounge: Got an embarrassingly hilarious family anecdote burning a hole in your brain pockets? Need to dish on weird things your talking dog says during Mad Men? Spill that shit at FIPS' editor Kerri Doherty's monthly story slam, "I Like You Maude." This month features special guest Andy Ross from The Onion and Mad Magazine. 7:30pm-9:30pm, FREE.
* Tuesday, Oct. 18 - Saturday, Oct. 22: CMJ: Check out all those indie acts that you may have smelled coming from across the country. Slope shows at Union Hall and Rock Shop. Times and prices vary.
* Thursday, Oct. 20 - Sunday, Nov. 13: Medical Melodrama, Old Stone House: The Polybe + Seats theatre co. presents the French melodrama Alice, or the Scottish Gravediggers about love triangles and gruesome medical experimentation. Decorative gourd season, motherfuckers! 8pm Th-Sa, 3pm Su, $18.
