Whassup: Independence Day Edition

via imgur.com

It's America Day, y'all! Finally, the one date on which it's totally cool to love America as much as a Fox News anchor does. That is to say, deliriously, passionately, kind-of-creepily. However you express your America love -- quoting Bill Pullman, draping your naked body in the Stars and Stripes, or just flat out love-fucking a bald eagle -- this day is for you. Welcome to Whassup: Independence Day Edition:

* Thursday, July 4: Back to the Beach, Rockaway Beach: Sixpoint and something called My Social List (which I presume is a communist plot) are hosting the first of Rockaway Beach's free summer parties. The concert also celebrates Rockaway's speedy recovery from Hurricane Sandy. In any event, it's a good excuse to start getting your Independence Day drunk on in the afternoon. 1pm, FREE.

* Thursday, July 4: ID4 BBQ, Freddy's: After the concert, train it back Slope-ward for Freddy's Independence Day BBQ. You can bring your own comestibles to char, or partake of the meats, veggies and soy-based products supplied and cooked by Freddy's resident grill-masters. $3 for all taps, because this is America, and you will put beer inside you. 2:20pm.

* Thursday, July 4: Hank Williams Veteran Tribute, Freddy's: The CasHank Hootenanny Jamboree marks Independence Day with a Hank Williams tribute to returning WWII vets, among other country classics. Bring an instrument, your voice or simply your love of drunken sing-a-longs and 'Merica.  8pm, FREE.

* Friday, July 5: America Fuck Yeah Burlesque, Bell House: The talented, progressively nakeder ladies of Wasabassco Burlesque will help you raise a flag pole for everyone to salute at their America Fuck Yeah! show. At attention. 8pm, $20.

* Friday, July 5: Frankenstein, Old Stone House: Piper Theatre begins its free summer productions with a story of a groaning, stiff-legged, reanimated corpse who accidentally kills a young girl. You know, light beach reading! Anyway, it's a classic story for a reason. After opening night, playing Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays until July 20. 8:30pm, FREE.

* Sunday, July 7: 4th Anniversary (FREE BOWLING), BK Bowl (Williamsburg): It's not ON the 4th, but it is Brooklyn Bowl's 4th anniversary, so consider this your continued July 4th celebration. Honor America by bowling: Walter Sobchak would approve. Come anytime from noon until close, and you can score an hour of free bowling and shoes. 12pm-close, FREE.

* Sunday, July 7: Ice Cream Takedown, Bell House: Ice cream is the one saving grace of summer when the gross, sweaty unbearable-subway-stank days arrive. They're not quite here yet, but Matt Timms' Takedowns are ready to bring you the cold stuff. It works like this: amateur ice cream competitors shove deliciousness into your face, and then you vote for the bestest and die happily from never-ending ice cream headaches. 2pm, $15.

* Monday, July 8: Tell the Bartender, Union Hall: One more new storytelling show at Union Hall. This one arises from the "Tell a Bartender" podcast, hosted by Katharine Heller. Guests include Lizz Winstead, who co-created a little show called the Daily (Show). Also includes prizes, drink recipes and analysis of the weirdness of craigslist. 8pm, $10.

* Tuesday, July 9: Whiskey Coke Anniversary, Freddy's: The rowdy literary kids of the Having a Whiskey Coke with You reading/open mic series/get-drunk party are celebrating two whole years of shouting poetry into your goddamn ears. Come celebrate with whiskey and words. 8pm, FREE.
