Whassup: BBQ'd Edition
Summer stickiness has arrived just days in advance of the holiday weekend, and you know what that means: time to funnel charred meat down your gullet and suck in lungfulls of BBQ smoke. In between partaking of Prospect Park's healthful offerings (jogging in a smoke cloud!), here's some more Slope fun to enjoy. It's Whassup: Barbecued Edition:
* NOW! Sixpoint in Cans, Bierkraft and other emporia of sin: The Red Hook concoctor of things that make me drool like Sweet Action, Righteous Ale and Bengali Tiger IPA makes its brews available in stores for the first time--in cans, natch, not dumbass bottles. Just in time to slip one into a paper bag and crack it open at a Prospect Park BBQ this weekend. When the cops come sniffing around, offer them a slice of pie. It works. $10 for a four pack.
* Thursday, May 26: Bhangra Dance Party, Brooklyn Bridge Park: In Celebrate Brooklyn's last dance party of the season, DJ Rekha of Basement Bhangra fame orchestrates a South Asian boomshakalaka with brass funk band Red Baraat. Learn how to impress that cute, Indian coworker (not really) with a gratis dance lesson as the event opens. Free, 7pm.
* Thursday, May 26: Rooftop Films' Shorts, Fort Greene: The underground film series addresses our microscopic attention spans--HEY! Movies! Shorts! Animation, comedy, those things MTV used to play! What's over there?? INTERNET! Roof of Brooklyn Technical High School, 29 Fort Greene Place. $10, 8pm doors.
* Sunday, May 29: Civil War Procession, Greenwood Cemetary: Honoring the 150th anniversary of America's near sundering, a Grand Procession of Civil War reenactors, fiddlers, singers and a brass band will tour candlelit graves of Civil War veterans. Because, oh yeah, Memorial Day. That's why it's called that. $10, 7pm musical warmup.
* Monday, May 30: Freaks and Geeks Party, Bell House: The TV-watching party crew that previously filled Bell House with flickering blue light from Arrested Development, It's Always Sunny and Twin Peaks returns with another cult show. And you won't just sit on your ass watching episodes--well, you can. But there's also McKinley High School quizzes, year-book photography for year book, costume prizes, a Bill Haverchuck impersonator contest and other activities. 8pm, $5.
* Saturday, June 4: First Saturday, Brooklyn Museum: First Saturdays return! The theme is Afro-Latin party with Ghanaian musician Blitz the Ambassador, a discussion of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao for you Park Slope weirdos who read books, dance performances, hands-on art, a dance party and more. FREE, 5-11pm.
* Saturday, June 4: Children's Benefit at Southpaw: Organized by a Prospect Park couple who lost a daughter to a genetic disorder, this benefit honors the Mt. Sinai NIC Unit staff who did all they could for the child. David Weinstone from Music for Aardvarks and other Mammals entertains the kiddos with catchy ditties. A marionette trio from Puppetworks opens. All proceeds go to Mt. Sinai NICU. Noon, $7 kids/$18 adults DOS.
