Undercover: Park Slope Food Coop [Lettuce Outta Here]

Well, well, well. Had an interesting gem of an email in our old inbox yesterday regarding our favorite neighborhood food cooperative and yours. Check it:

Hey FIPS,

I don't normally write in about stuff like this, but I was shopping at the Food Coop on Monday evening and saw something that was so gross, I'm still having nightmares about it (pic attached). I know it might look like there's dressing on this lettuce, but there's not--that's rotting, rancid sludge. Complete with flies circling and brown juice dripping from the box. In case you're wondering if I snapped this picture out back by the dumpster, that would be a NO. This disgusting, rotting lettuce soup was sitting in a box INSIDE the store.  I caught of whiff of it and almost gagged. Even worse, there appeared to be two shift workers tasked with sorting through the rotting lettuce to see if there was anything in there that could be used to stock the shelves. It was seriously disgusting. I know that this sort of thing might be a common occurrence at places that deal with fresh produce,  but I was under the impression that normal procedure in a situation like this was just to throw the rotting food out? Cause guess what: I don't want to buy rotten lettuce. Made me think about all the other rotten shit that might be making its way on to the shelves. Just thought you should know.

L.

Verrrrry interesting tale you tell, L. Perhaps that's why prices at the Coop are so darn low?
