The Park Slope Salad Bar You May Not Have Known About

Here at FIPS we’ve repeatedly bemoaned the lack of DIY salad bars in Park Slope that seem to be found on every street corner in Manhattan.

Turns out that all along there has been a plentiful buffet of veggies and lettuces, hidden from view by a giant building full of medical staff, patients and distracting ambulances.  Yes, there’s a salad bar in the bowels of Methodist Hospital on 7th Avenue.  In fact, there’s a whole cafeteria that serves up pizza, sandwiches and entrees of all types that are served from morning to evening.  And you don't even need to walk into the hospital pretending to want to visit your great Aunt Myrtle post hip surgery, or clutching your side while faking a ruptured appendix. You can just stroll right on in from the side entrance on 6th Street and get. Your. Salad. On.

It’s by no means a giant salad bar, but it does offer four mixes of greens and about 24 different toppings, plus a wide variety of dressings.    Is it gourmet?  No.  Does it have exotic ingredients?  Not really.   Of what’s there, do you get to pile on whatever you want for $6.40 a pound?  Damn right. And yeah, I’m sure you can make something similar at home for pennies on the dollar, but do you really want to chop, shred and manage 12 different toppings?   Heck no.

There’s also a pretty extensive dining room with an outdoor patio.  Unfortunately there’s no view of the emergency room, which could make for an exciting eating experience.  Clear! (WHOOMPH.) But you do get to break bread with other visitors, staff, doctors and nurses (the latter two look younger than Doogie Howser -- maybe it’s all the salad they eat).
