This year’s flu season has been more unrelenting than strollers in a Park Slope bar. According to the Center for Disease Control, it’s officially hit epidemic status: 7.3 percent of deaths last week were caused by pneumonia and the flu. The amount of visits to emergency rooms over the bug are up 150% in NYC.
This is some serious shit, ppl. “It’s a bad year," City Health Commissioner Thomas Farley pointed out in the most obvious statement of the season. "So we’re seeing plenty of cases of flu and plenty of people sick with flu.”
I joined the party last week. Sunday and Monday I was laid up on my couch like a lazy stoner, delirious and watching cartoons while coughing up loogies -- only it wasn’t thanks to a fat bowl, just a fat bug. My poor wife picked up where I left off on Wednesday and Thursday. Our remedies included couch time, TV, plenty of liquids (especially OJ), some chicken soup and a shitload of Day and NyQuil. To quote Dennis Leary: “NyQuil we love you, you giant fucking ‘Q’!”
Apparently, getting a flu shot is also a fantastic idea (unless you're Hugh Jackman), so here is a widget, courtesy of Gothamist, which will help you find a place near you. After checking it out, tell us your own flu remedies in the comments section.
