Tell Us How You Really Feel About...Composting

Image via NY Daily News

As we reported back in May, curbside composting is now a part of daily life in Park Slope. But, nearly three months in, not everybody is loving it:

Please post a negative story about composting. I have loved this neighborhood the last few years but the new compost bins are forcing me to reconsider living here. My wife and two year old daughter live on the bottom story of a brownstone. I used to be able to stand in the front yard (a small patch of grass with one tree) and watch people walk by while getting fresh air. Early this summer I was forced to share my yard with hordes of unwanted guests. Whenever I walk out the front door I am greeted by a biblical swarm of flies, guarding their home, the compost bin.  These aren't normal flies, they are Jurassic park looking behemoths, about the size of a finger. Just to confirm their origin we lifted the hatch and saw scores of writhing maggots. This is progress?

I try to never used it. I take that back, I put some yard cuttings in there one day and was told I used the wrong bag> really? I used a large black one? Like every large black yard work bag I have ever seen. This is the wrong one? Now I just leave the yard trash out there like I always have.

Sanitation was one of the first modern technologies making cities more livable. The practice of throwing trash into the street may have lead to the black death and other epidemics. Now Park Slope is taking a 500 year step in the wrong direction? Why?

It increases sickness, disease, rodents, It favors the rich, like Bloomberg, that don't eat at home,
it doesn't impact global warming, one of the main justifications, it just moves methane from the landfill to my front yard. In New York its got to be one of the stupidest innovations. Who has room for 4 trashcans in their tiny apartments? This is corporate welfare helping big garbage make more money by having their slaves, I mean customers, sort trash for them.

Please, someone has to complain, if not you then who? Please get the word out.
No Fly Zone

So, how gnarly is it, brownstone dwellers?
