The Stench of Summer: Yummy Yum Pee Yoo

Summer in the city stinks. Literally. As in, this heat wave has created malodorousness on 7th avenue alone that has reached noxious levels.

I want an odor advisory put out.

What I didn't know until Gothamist told me (fine, via The Wall Street Journal), is that there is actually a division of the city's Environmental Protection Agency that investigates the manifest odor complaints and hands out violations for the stinkiest perps.

Fracked In Park Slope

As I know I've said before (and it bears repeating, because you people are a little slow on the uptake), we weekend farmers have been sounding the alarm for a while now that BP's oil spill is going to look like small potatoes compared to the calamity on its way to a cup of water, a country house, and apparently a bagel near YOU.

That's right, it's not just me yelling from the wilderness--the Terrace Bagels dude is now on board too. Maybe he too has a weekender in the Borscht Belt? And, fuck, what would the world (fine, NYC) come to without bagels? I don't know, bagels may be as essential as water. And apparently, vice versa.

So, when I last left off, I was getting a good lather on about Governor Paterson's craven support for digging 50,000 natural gas drilling wells throughout upstate New York, using the scary-ass sounding “Halliburton technique” (aka fracking).

CON ED TO BK: Sweat It Out

So, it's lookin like its gonna be a loooong, hot, wet, American summer around the BK.

Yesterday eve, word started trickling in from BK residents that Con Ed was making the phone rounds...and basically begging all y'all to turn off any "non-essential" electrical appliances.

Refrigerators were given a pass, but AC's not so much.

Apparently the heat of the last few days is sending electricity usage through the effin roof...and now bitches are worried about a brown out.

Gothamist managed to FURTHER clarify shit with a press release from Con Ed late last evening:

"Because of problems on electrical equipment supplying power to several neighborhoods in Brooklyn, Con Edison has reduced voltage by 8 percent to the area... One affected area is bounded by Newtown Creek on the north, Graham Avenue and Throop Avenue on the east, Fulton Street and Pacific Street on the south and the East River on the west. The other affected area is bounded by Fifth Avenue to Prospect Park West and from Pacific Street to 23rd Street.

"Company crews are working now to repair the problems. Con Edison has asked customers in the affected area to turn off all non-essential electrical appliances to help reduce electricity usage until equipment problems can be resolved... Con Edison urges customers to call 1-800-75-CONED promptly if they are experiencing any service difficulties."

As for wtf is going on today, I have no clue. I haven't been outside yet, but I'm guessing that it's Africa hot again, and my ass will be a sweaty mess by the time I arrive at the subway.

So yeah: be careful and don't waste energy-n-shit! Cause I SWEAR TO GAWD, if I gotta endure this heat without any AC, shit's gonna get ug-lay around here. Like Dexter ug-lay.

REDUCE, RE-USE, RECYCLE! OR CONSERVE! WHATEVER!

MISSING CAT?

Ok, so we always post about missing dogs, but here's some possible scoop on a possible missing cat from one of our loyal readers:

"A while back, I saw a poster on 3d St. for a missing grey & white cat (it's gone now) and this morning, I spotted what is likely said cat, sans collar, on 5th Ave. by Key Foods. He/she is clearly a house cat, looks maybe 4 yrs old, has a white face w/ grey/black fur on her head and back. She wasn't in the mood to be picked up & carried, but I fed her & tried to get her to follow me home. No dice. If you post this, and anyone has seen that same poster, have them pass the word along!"

Anyone?

We don't have a pic, unfortch, but let us know if you have any scoop.

[FIPS CARES] CHARLIE, LOST BULL TERRIER

Let's all help find Charlie.

Here's the scoop:

"Help! Our bull terrier mix Charlie was lost on St. Marks Ave and Carlton Ave on May 15, at about 6 p.m. It was reported by a neighbor that she may have been taken by a couple who said they were going to take her to a shelter. She didn't have her tags on, but she is chipped.

She is chocolate brown with a white blaze down her snout and white on her paws. She has a very sweet disposition, and pointy ears. Her ears droop if she's nervous.

She's a mid-size dog, about 50 lbs.

Any information or if you've seen her, please call 917-776-0413, or 646-513-0536.
Thank you!!
