Really, Daily News? Again with the "trend" piece about something that's not a new trend?

Image via ontheinside.comThe New York Daily News (sic)* is pissing me off.  Uh-gain.  They've written some piece-of-shit trend piece about how Brooklyn's "trendiest" restaurants don't take reservations and if you want to eat there, you're going to have to wait a long time.  So.  SO!  Here, in no particular order of importance, are my top 5 bitchy complaints about this latest piece of shit/waste of newsprint article.

Ahem.

1.  Any idea how long the wait is for a table at The Spotted Pig?  Crazy, right?  Yeah, but you could make a reservation there, prolly, because they're in Manha--aaaaah!  No!  Turns out there are restaurants in Manhattan that don't take rezzies, and which are also trendy, and for which the wait is long.  So, New York Daily News, when you say, "It's a Brooklyn thing," you are exactly and completely wrong.

2.  The News notes that old-school restaurants in Brooklyn, like Peter Luger's and River Café, take reservations.  But "stylish newcomers" don't.  One of those "stylish newcomers," according to this article, is al di la, which has only been open for about 15 years, as far as I know.

3.  If you've actually purchased a copy of the New York Daily News, you're probably not very bright.  Thankfully, you have your recently purchased newspaper to clue you into the fact that you can go to a nearby bar and have a goddamned fucking Christian drinky-drink while you're waiting for your table.

4.  Sometimes, restaurants actually open up bars nearby, so that people can wait (and maybe even gnosh) without going too far.  This is neither a new thing (The Farm on Adderley shares ownership with Sycamore, for example, and  al di la has its own space just around the corner), nor is it a Brooklyn thing (case in point--Momofuku Ssam Bar and Booker and Dax have common ownership.

5.  Here's a quote from the article that'll explain for you exactly how the New York Daily News regards Brooklyn:  "Does this sound like too much contorting to get a table… in one of the boroughs?"  Yeah.  You know what?  Fuck you, Daily News.

*I wrote "sic" after that in parentheses, because the New York Daily News doesn't actually print news, so it's like a big fat fucking typo that they have that name on their masthead.  Get it?  Ha ha ha.  I'm awesome!

Thomas,

NYDN are morons and it's fine that you feel this way but I will add this...if you aren't going to take reservations then you shouldn't accept tables of more than 8 on a weekend night. Yeah, Talde I am talking to you. They had a party of 16 last weekend on a Saturday night. That place is tiny to begin with. 2.5 hour wait. Apologie appreciated but still no thanks.

And then Fonda, who doesn't take reservations either, closes the entire restaurant on a Saturday afternoon! Brunch for no one. How is THAT keeping it local? That's keeping it exclusive. At least if they took reservations you could call and be told that "sorry we are closed today for a party." Nope. Instead you show up after circling for a spot for who know how long only to find out you aren't having lunch there no matter how long you wait.
