Park Slope Wi-Fi Update: Your Q's Answered!
When we reported that Park Slope was vying to be a totally free Wi-Fi town, FIPS commenter Freddie Ja voiced his concerns:
"someone is paying for this wifi, it's not 'free'. the question is will this be coming out of taxes? if so then i say go shove your 'free' wifi up your a."
Well put, Freddie. You'll be happy to know that not one single rectum will be penetrated with this proposed Wi-Fi plan.
Romio has answered this and other questions surrounding their quest to bring free, public Wi-Fi to our fine nabe. After speaking with Dana Spiegel, Director of NYC Wireless, the following Q's have been A'd on Romio's site:
- This shit isn't coming out of your tax dollars. Free WiFi networks work through a partnership between local businesses, Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) and big real estate companies.
- Free Wi-Fi does not mean giant, ugly towers. The Wi-Fi routers are the size of a deck of playing cards.
- Public Wi-Fi is always a risky game when it comes to security, so you PROBABLY shouldn't check your Wells Fargo savings account balance while strolling down 7th ave.
If you guys want to make this free public Wi-Fi dream into something FERREAL, sign up for a Romio account and tell them you want free Wi-Fi on their Park Slope neighborhood page.
